Marie, the new security guard at the Johnson & Carter building, was listening attentively as Tom, the oldest of the group, told her about the forbidden thirteenth floor.
"Nobody's been up there in years, Marie. It's always kept locked, and that's how it should stay," he said, his weathered face serious.
Marie raised an eyebrow. "What's so special about it?"
A third guard, Jake, interjected with a haunted look in his eyes. "It's not what's special, it's what's... terrifying."
Marie laughed lightly, thinking they were playing a prank on the newbie. Yet, the seriousness on their faces told her this was no joke.
After their break, Marie found herself patrolling the twelfth floor. Her mind was occupied by thoughts of the thirteenth floor and the guarded secrets it held. Unable to resist, she found herself picking the locks on the padlocked chains blocking the stairs.
The door groaned open revealing a level that time had forgotten. Dust layered every surface. Cubicles and computers stood silent, untouched for years. A chill hung in the air, colder than any natural draft. There was an eerie silence, heavy with abandonment and neglect.
As she crept further, the fluorescent lights flickered above, casting an ominous dance of shadows. A soft whisper filled the corridor, barely discernible. Marie froze. A shape moved in the corner of her eye, but when she turned, nothing was there.
With every step, the foreboding feeling of being watched grew stronger. Yet, her curiosity compelled her to explore further. A clatter echoed from a distant office. Taking a deep breath, Marie moved towards the sound.
Inside the office, she was met with a chilling sight. Phantoms dressed in business attire, bullet holes puncturing their spectral forms, were reliving their last moments, oblivious to her presence.
"What... happened here?" she whispered, horror creeping into her voice. A massacre, she realized. A massacre that had left the office in a state of derelict disrepair.
The phantoms vanished, leaving Marie alone once again. Or so she thought. From the darkness emerged another apparition, more horrifying than the rest. A woman, her head hanging limply from her shoulders, staggered toward her, her eyes blazing with a terrifying malice.
Marie turned to run, her heart pounding in her chest. The door leading to the twelfth floor was just within reach when she felt a chilling hand wrap around her ankle. The ghost's wail echoed in the empty office, dragging her back. Marie screamed as the thirteenth floor door slammed shut behind her, sealing her fate.
She knew then, the other guards were not pranking her. The thirteenth floor was indeed a place best left alone. Now, it seemed, she was going to be its newest, unwilling resident.
