Calum's P. O.V.
-----I guess it began the summer before my Junior year. The summer I moved all the way from New York and everything I knew to a small town called Appleton in Wisconsin, AKA the most boring state in America. I was so pissed at my mom for forcing such a huge move on me right in the middle of my high school years, and I always made sure she knew it.
"But Calum," she would say. "It'll be good for us. I did my research and this town seems so perfect! First of all, you hardly ever get out anymore. Appleton is such a cute little town that it will almost literally be begging you to explore it. Secondly, you know this polluted New York air is bad on my lungs; fresh air will do me some good. And thirdly, you might actually be able to find a nice, friendly, modest, good girl in a small town. Not one of those rebel, disrespectful, rude girls who hardly cover their bodies with clothing you always bring home."
And that was how any conversation went when ever I brought up my despise towards the move. Get out more, help her lungs, find a "good" girl; get out more, help her lungs, find a "good" girl; get out more, help her lungs, find a "good" girl. Blah, blah, blah. I would always fight her back saying that finding a decent girl is not a good enough reason to move us so far from my three best friends, Luke Ashton and Michael, and my school and my life; and anyways, I personally find "good" girls pretty fucking lame. What's the fun in a girl who doesn't want to sneak out in the middle of the night to meet you in the park for a make out session, or a girl who doesn't let you touch her butt, or a girl who only does her homework and focuses on school like it actually matters? Risky is my kinda girl. You know, short booty skirts and crop tops and matching bras and panties. Girls who always want to experiment and dare to do things they've never done before. My mom has never approved of my girl taste, of course, saying I'm never gonna make it far with girls like that, because those kind of girls "don't stay loyal" and are gonna change the type of man I'll be come. I honestly couldn't give a flying fuck. Having a fun girl for a week is better than having a "good" girl for a year; and being a man, well, that can wait.
My efforts to thwart the move never did work because here I am now, driving my mom into where the town begins after a long, 16 hour and 25 minute drive. A quaint green sign on the side of the road says "Welcome to Appleton! We hope you enjoy your stay!"
I laugh. "Yep," I mutter, popping the "p", "I doubt that's gonna happen," not realizing what I had just said was out loud. My mom gives me a disapproving look and I imagine her scolding me in her mind.
The roads of the town aren't even paved. Everything seems so... so... old. As I drive I don't notice many cars, and if there are any, they are parked outside houses or garages and look as though they haven't been touched in years. The houses are all super small and boring pastel colors. There is only one grocery store that I see and it is unlike any other I have ever seen. There are multiple stands outside with brightly colored fresh fruits just laying out. I watch as the only person I have seen out so far just walk straight up, pick up an apple, bite into it, and walk away. There isn't anyone sitting out and watching the stands so I guess it's all free. Odd. I don't see a movie theater nor a mall. There's one tiny bank, but it looks like it's not even open. I see two restaurants, one called "Sally" and one that doesn't even have a sign to tell me the restaurant name. There is a cute little park with old metal play equipment instead of modern plastic that most parks today are made of. Other than that, the town is just more dirt road and houses.
Soon I take a left turn to where our new home street is. When I pull up and park on the small driveway, I take a good long look at my new home. It's also small, just like everything else in this shitty town. It's covered in a very creamy boring color of yellow that makes me want to barf, and has flowers planted on the house's outskirts under the windows.
