I was five when I first met him. he was 6. though according to him he was and is the smartest 6-year-old. I was playing in the park. I remember it was Reema Aunty with me that day. I was playing with a ball when someone approached me.
"Where did you get it from?"
I looked at the guy dressed in blue shorts and a white t- t-shirt looking at the ball I was holding.
" my dada brought it for me" I replied.
I was a shy kid back then. I think it stuck with me as I got older, speak when spoken to, answer when asked. just that I am better at masking it now.
I turned around and started playing again when I felt somebody snatching the ball.
"I was not done talking to you"
I looked at him like any shy 5-year-old kid would look. confused.
"I want to play with it" I looked at the toy and then at him. I offered the ball to him. he snatched the ball and started playing with it. after about 5 minutes he came back.
'it is no fun. I want to play like you!"
" you mean you want to play catch-catch?" he nodded like he knew exactly what I meant.
for a few turns, he was terrible at it. but as the time went he got a hold of it. he would do some stunts and flex how he caught the ball so easily. After that day he would come daily sometimes bringing me chocolates or cupcakes that his chef would make. he never talked about his father or even his mother. he would talk about how he scored good marks in exams or how he learned to cook chocolate cupcakes. he would finish his homework and always nag his babysitter to bring him here. I would just sit and listen to him. there was always a big black car that he would come in. At that time I did not know he was someone important. to me, he was the annoying boy who would come and play with me. I was getting used to it, getting used to him.
I was 10 when we had our first fight.
it was his birthday 7 August. I requested my mother to make a cake for my friend. so obliged and made his av. chocolate cake. I brought a teddy bear too thinking that maybe he would like it. I kept waiting as he was late that day to park. 2 hours passed but he never arrived. I was disappointed and sad. suddenly a boy came towards me. he was about my age. he was ogling at the cake that was kept near me. I observed that he was dressed in old and shabby clothes.
" apko chahiye ye?" I asked him and he nodded slowly.
" ajj mere dost ka janamdin hai. ye cake usi ke liye tha. vo to aya nahi, par le sakte ho" he looked at me hopefully as I moved towards him and handed him the cake. I saw another boy younger than him standing a little far.
" apka dost hai vo?" he looked back and nodded negatively
" bhai"
" ap use bhi bula lo. vo bhi kha lega"
he nodded as he called back the younger boy standing in the distance.
I sat with them as they enjoyed the cake.
suddenly a black car pulled up as I beamed and ran towards it. he was here. he was dressed fancy in a black shirt and trousers.
" where were you? I was waiting for you for the past 2 hours". I complained. he passed me his heartwarming smile
"I am sorry. Dad organized a party. they were not letting me leave." his smile faltered as he looked behind me at the boys eating cake
"I bought it for you. but you didn't come so I gave it to them," i replied to his unasked question
his demeanor suddenly changed as he looked at me angrily
" that was mine. you could have waited a little more"
" hey don't get angry. see I bought something else also"
before I could show him he walked towards the boys and snatched the cake from them. they looked at me and then at him
" this cake was mine. she bought it for me" was all he said.
"Kabir that's bad manners. give them the cake I will make another one for you"
" no, he is not supposed to have my cake"
"Kabir, what is wrong with you? you are not supposed to take something away while they are eating it." I snatched the cake from him gave it to them and told them that could eat it at home. he looked at them angrily and marched towards his car.
"Kabir gift to le lo"
" ek kam karo ye bhi unhi ko de do"
he slammed the door of his SUV. I took a deep breath and walked towards Rajesh uncle his driver. "Kaka ye rakh lijiye please, aur ghar paunch kar kabir ko de dijiye ga"
he smiled at me and took the huge teddy bear from me. without saying goodbye he left. the next day I couldn't go to the park as I had to attend my sister's annual function.
day after tomorrow when I reached the park he was sitting there on the swing
"Kabir!"
suddenly he looked up and beamed at me. he ran towards me and gave me a hug.
"I am sorry" he spoke not breaking the hug.
" why what happened?"
"I yelled at you yesterday. I was just angry. nobody was letting me leave that boring party and then when I came here they were eating cake that you only made for me. i thought after yesterday you would never talk to me again"
" aww little Kabir was scared of me" I giggled as he broke the hug.
" i...was not scared"
" Don't worry I am not mad at you. I was disappointed that u were late"
"Acha teddy Kaisa laga? "
He rolled his eyes at me as we walked in the park
" Acha the"
I looked at him disappointed as he had not found my letter in it
" Kush aur tha sath me? "
I asked him hopefully
"Nahi? "
"Acha? "
" Forget about it. Let's go play on the swings" I nodded my head as he dragged me towards the ground.
