'Your story checks out,' the Sheriff grudgingly bit out.

'About time,' grumbled Ash, slipping out of the cell door and past the disgruntled man.

'But don't leave town,' he commanded.

'Wouldn't dream of it.'

She left quickly after gathering her things, not willing for the Sheriff to change his mind.

She'd have to pick up something special for Tabitha. Though the older woman wouldn't have batted an eye at lying to the police. In fact, she had been rather looking forward to the challenge.

But there was nothing for it. Ash had been at the sorority house far too long to just be comforting her sister. Couple that with the discovery of Charity's personal possessions and she'd worried that the cops may have put two and two together. Thankfully, only the Deputy seemed to have his thinking cap on, and that was because he believed in her gift.

Perhaps if they'd never met, he'd be gunning for her hide just as much as the Sheriff.

She called her sister, but her phone went straight through to voicemail. Ash cursed internally and looked up at the dark sky.

She'd lost the entire day, stuck in a cell whilst the Deputy convinced the Sheriff to look into her story. The Sheriff was more pigheaded than she'd realised. It would have taken an hour, maybe two, to confirm what she'd told them about Pastor Jim. The story was even published in the local paper. A few taps on the computer and a phone call should have seen her set free by lunch.

But now it was after 8pm. Her sister wasn't answering her calls. And she was not looking forward to the walk back to the sorority house to get her car.

She turned as she heard the police doors open behind her. The Deputy waved goodbye to someone behind him before joining her.

'Need a lift?'

'Won't you get into trouble?'

He pretended to ponder her question as he led her to his parked car.

'The way I see it, we have one girl missing, and it would be against my civic duty if I let you walk alone at night.'

'Very...chivalrous of you.'

'It also gives us time to finish our conversation from before.'

She looked away, glaring at the marks on her wrist.

After her announcement about Charity, a tingle at the back of her head told her that they weren't alone. She had silenced the Deputy with a look as another officer entered and took her to a cell. It was an abrupt end to their conversation and one that Ash had been grateful for.

If she could have avoided the Deputy for a little longer, she would have been happier, but life had different plans as she clambered into his passenger seat.
