The next morning Jess, Ash and the Deputy sat around Tabitha's kitchen table. The Deputy was staring at pictures on Jess' phone whilst she explained her theory about Charity's drawings. Ash was only half listening. The other half was wondering what was going on with her lovable, if eccentric, friend and the Colonel.
She couldn't fail to notice that whilst the Deputy and Julia left, he remained. And she was positive he was still somewhere upstairs, even though she'd checked all the spare beds and he was nowhere to be found.
'So, did you drop the lovely Julia home or did you end up answering more of her questions?' Ash asked as a way of distracting herself.
She knew the Deputy could handle a new relationship. In fact, he needed it. But Tabitha's was different. Ever since losing her husband, she'd become self sufficient and hated any mention of relying on men for anything more than pleasure or entertainment. But there was a soft twinkle in her eyes when she looked at the Colonel. It was a look that made Ash worry about her.
'It would have been strange if she didn't have many questions,' he countered.
'So she stayed the night?' Ash winked.
He let out a long, suffering sigh. 'You're psychic, so why don't you tell me what happened?'
'Can't. Haven't seen anything.' She munched on a pancake whilst the other two looked at her in confusion. 'I'm not omnipresent, remember? I can't see and hear all.'
'But you could find out if you wanted to?'
She shook her head. 'Trust me, it's easier to block these kinds of things out and just ask the direct question. It's easier on my head.'
'Still got that migraine?' Jess asked.
'It could have been getting brained by a ruler that did it or...'
'Your gift is playing up,' Jess finished for her.
Ash didn't reply but reached out for her mug of tea, only to have it skirt out of reach before she could touch it. The other two watched as she sighed in frustration and yanked the mug closer to her.
'I've seen some strange things, but moving objects is next level,' admitted the Deputy.
'I'm going to put some binding symbols on my arms after breakfast. Thankfully, so far it's just mugs that I seem to have an issue with.'
'At least it's not tables,' the Deputy muttered. 'I'm pretty sure you almost gave Julia a coronary in the morgue.'
'In fairness, I think there was a lot going on, so me moving a table with my mind was not that big of a deal.'
She shied away from their disbelieving stares, wanting to keep the idea that she was in some ways not a complete alien at the kitchen table.
'Since we're speaking about Julia, did she hear anything from the cops about the morgue?' Jess asked.
