'You've got to be fucking kidding me.' Ash held up the long flowing skirt and beaded attachments that rattled every time the wind caught it. 'This has to be offensive to someone.'
Jess tried to hide her smirk. 'They wanted a 'realistic' psychic,' she said.
'Why can't I just wear what I normally wear?' Ash begged. She took a sniff of the costume and recoiled. 'This thing has never been washed,' she complained.
'Just put it on. They'll be opening the gates soon.'
Ash grumbled under her breath but went behind the stall to change.
'Is everything okay?'
Jess turned to see Mira walking towards her with a few other housemates.
'Ash is just putting the costume on,' she reassured them, leaving out her sister's feelings on the subject.
'Good, it's almost show time. I think there's a few people at the gates waiting for you,' Mira said before breezing away whilst still issuing orders.
Jess waited outside the tent until Ash came back out, looking disgruntled.
'Not. A. Single. Word,' she warned whilst Jess strained her facial muscles, trying not to smile.
'You look great.'
Ash gave her a withering look, but remained silent as she secured the tent doors. Around them, other university students were doing the same. The last finishing touches of the stands were being added as they all readied themselves for the onslaught of people.
'At least they let me use my own things. I put a stop to the crystal ball.'
'And a good thing, too. Since when have you ever used a crystal ball?' Tabitha asked, supported on one side by the Colonel.
'Never found them all that useful,' Ash deadpanned.
'It's not like you'll need it.' Tabitha winked before spotting an antique stall. 'I do need to start looking for Christmas presents.' She flashed a smile at her companion, who beamed back at her.
'Then after you, my lady.' The colonel led the way whilst Tabitha blushed beside him.
'What's going on with them?' asked Jess.
Ash watched them walking away with narrowed eyes. 'If I didn't know any better, it would look as though the Colonel was trying to court her.'
'Isn't that a good thing?'
'It could be,' Ash grudgingly admitted. 'Especially when it's Tabitha's idea.'
Jess frowned as she watched the older couple ambling between stalls. 'What do you mean?'
Ash looked at her with an incredulous look before shaking herself. 'There is very little in Tabitha's life that wasn't her own decision. The Colonel there may think that it was just pure coincidence that he's Tabitha's new bridge partner, but I don't need psychic powers to know that there were more than a few strings pulled behind the scenes for that to happen. Nothing happens without a nudge. And Tabitha could be best described as a sledgehammer.'
