He knew.

From the look in their eyes, grim and accusing. They had no proof. But he knew.

Because of who he was.

Shadow the hedgehog, the Ultimate Lifeform.

Both a blessing and a curse to their world.

With great power coursing through his body. The ability to manipulate Chaos, time itself, his arsenal of weapons.

He was death incarnate.

He didn't blame them even as he leaned against the wall, his arms folded.

Listening to Knuckles and Tails explain to the rest of the village that they would have to up the defenses for the time being. Knuckles explained about traps that they could lay out at every entrance. Tails suggested a curfew in place ever night at sundown would also be a strategic plan.

The attacks only happened during the cover of the night. The villagers were terrified.. as expected. A few glanced fearfully in Shadow's direction and looked away, trembling. Hoping he wouldn't notice. Hoping he wouldn't spear them down.

He scoffed to himself. He noticed every glance. Ever person who held their breath around him. As though he was a mindless killing machine. He stormed off, grinding his teeth. Hoping he could just chaos blast the idiots who looked his way.

Unfortunately, that may just prove their point. Instead, he made his way to the hilltop on the other side of the village. Where she would be waiting for him. The only person who didn't look at him like he was some type of monster. Like he wasn't a devil walking amongst them.

He caught sight of the familiar pink quills dancing in the light morning breeze as she stood, looking out at the beach beyond the mountain and the sea that stretched out after it. A scene of peace and serenity compared to the ruined hut and the unfortunate soul that had bled out the night before.

"Rose," he exhaled, relief speckled his tone. A change from his normal cold demeanor. Maybe he thought that the attacks would scare her off as well?

She turned to him, a smile of warmth and comfort breaking out on her face.

"Shadow.." She whispered, walking over to him and wrapping her arms around him. Her body trembled and he held her close, tightly.

"How bad was it this time?" She asked, her voice cracking with strain.

"Terrible," he squeezed his eyes shut, willing himself to forget the carnage within the small house. He began to tremble as well.

But she seemed to notice it.

"Shadow.. What's bothering you?" She frowned, caressing his cheek gently with the back of her fingers. Her anxious eyes scanning his. He could never hide anything from her.

"Some of the villagers.. Think it was me," he replied quietly, still holding her tightly, but unable to look her in the eyes. Afraid of what he might see in them. Afraid that she'll see him the same way..

"What a fat load of crap," She snarled, her voice cold and angry. "They think you did that? Like you'd ever tear anything down with your bare hands. Like you'd tear anyone down with your bare hands??! How could they!"

Her body was trembling again, but not with fear. Rage. Pure undiluted rage. Directed at those who thought ill of him. Him.

Relief flooded his body at her words. He squeezed her tightly.

"Rose..Rose.."

He was at a loss for words, but couldn't wipe that stupid grin off his face. Again, there was nothing he could hide from her. She pushed him away, glowering at him.

"Shadow the hedgehog.. Did you dare think.. For a minute.. That I could ever see you as a monster??"

He was quiet and embarrassed.

"Rose.. I.."

"Don't answer that, you complete arse! Come here!"

She yanked him towards her by the lapels of his leather jacket and kissed him hard. Shadow stumbled, but regained his footing, grabbing his girlfriend by her waist and lifting her up as they kissed. An action of love and concern as she stood too close to the edge.

"Seems like someone is happy to see me," He smirked as he pulled away, Amy gasped for breath, her arms around his neck as he held her.

Amy giggled.

"Oh, babe.. You know how terrible these last few weeks have been." Her face crumpled again. The six attacks in the last three weeks had taken their toll on her.

"Why don't you come stay with me till this blows over?" he nuzzles her neck, inhaling her delicious strawberry scent, willing to rid her of her worry.

She hesitated. She always did. Shadow's heart broke a little as she shook her head.

"You know I can't have the others finding out about us.." She whisper softly as she laid her head on his shoulder, a hand idling stroking his black and red streaked quills.

Right. Her friends. Tails, Knuckles, Sticks and that awful blue bastard, Sonic, with his cocky face that Shadow would dearly love to kick in. Maybe he would.. One day.

Even if it meant hearing an earful from Amy.

"Besides," She went on, "We still have to track down this monster. Whatever it is." She signed heavily.

But the next house could always be hers- No, Don't think like that, He scolded himself, as his heart began to race. Amy lifted her head and looked at him carefully. She smiled, knowing how worried he was of her. She knew, even if he didn't say it to her. She always did.

"Babe.. Don't worry. I'll be fine," She murmured softly, kissing his neck gently. He let out a small sound, quite unlike that which Death Incarnate would make.

Amy giggled.

"You know, I'd feel better if I could protect you through the night.. " His voice, however, was an octave deeper.

Amy smirked as she heard the affect she'd had on him.

"I'm sure that's all you'd do through the night," She teased, mischief twinkling in her eyes. He truly couldn't hide anything from her.

That night, Shadow couldn't sleep. He tossed and turned, but the panic from before surged through his body time and again.

What if Amy's house was next?

He sat up in bed, sweating profusely, in spite of the cool night breeze. To hell with her friends. He had to see her tonight. Just to check if she was safe. He just had to.

He grabbed his jacket and soon he was off, skating on his air shoes through the quiet of the night. A little too quiet since the villagers were now hiding in their house, too scared to venture into the open.

He heard a scuffing sound in the forest as he made his way to Amy's. Could it be..

He slowed down and hide behind a tree, listening. More scuffing sound and a moan. A man's voice. A thud and the man groaned as if he was being dragged along. Shadow peered around, with a frown and saw a large creature dragging a villager along. Fury shook in him as he followed the creature stealthily, a chaos Spear forming in his hand.

The creature moved into a clearing in the forest. Moonlight spilled over it as it laid its latest victim on the floor before it could tear it apart. Shadow stepped forward and - stopped. His body went cold. The monster was large and pink. And when it looked his way, he saw the eyes of his beloved as he stood, frozen in his place, his arm raised.. a chaos spear in his hand.

She sensed his hesitation and a large, sharp tooth smile spread across her face as she turned herself to her latest victim and began to claw at him, ripping him apart.

He couldn't kill her and she knew.

Because he could never hide anything from her.
