We landed on Heathrow around 1 pm, my father walked next to Max as they both discussed their next move on the championship title. I listened to them carefully, Max was like a son to my father and I always felt like Christian choose him before me. But I knew that thought wasn't true. But still, sometimes it felt like that.
I watched my father lay his hand on Max's shoulder as they walked through the hallway. I looked at the floor, maybe I was just jealous at Max. I never really got my father's attention. Only when we were at a Grand Prix, he showed interest because he wants me to become just like him. 'Maddy are you coming?' Dad asked when he had noticed my pace had slowed. 'I think I'm taking the bus home.' I told him. My father turned around and met my gaze. 'The bus?' He questioned. I nodded. 'The girls are here.' I told him. It was actually an excuse to run away from my feelings about my relationship with my father. 'Christian you go back home by car. Then I'll go with her.' Max told him. My father protested but then sighed. 'Alright you two.' He said then he turned around and went to the car. Max waited for me to catch up on him. He then looked at me and said nothing. 'Do you have a bus ticket?' He asked me then. I shook my head, Max grabbed his card and walked over to the bus that went to my home town. Max paid for the tickets and we got in. The driver said he was on a break but we could sit down already. I said nothing but when Max sat down next to me. 'You're running away from you father, aren't you?' I looked at him and then nodded.
'It's just my dad wants me to become something I am definitely not.' I explained to Max. Max looked at me sideways. 'You don't want to become a team principal?' I shook my head. 'I'm a girl I want to chase my own dreams.' I replied.
'But running away from your dad ain't going to work, Maddy.' Max sounded concerned.
He gave me a small pat on my shoulder and he leaned in. 'Just talk to him.' I looked at him but decided to remind silent. 'Your dad is a sympathetic and loving man, he'll understand you if you tell him how you feel.' Max added. Max then leaned back and looked up. 'I'm jealous of you, Maddy.'
I looked at him with a confused gaze. 'You're jealous of me?' I asked him. Max nodded.
'What you have with your faher, I never had with mine. My father wanted to make a champion out of me since I was a little kid. If I came second he'd leave me at a gas station. Yours would cheer you up, and discus the flaws of the race.' When Max told me this I knew he was right. My father was caring, and he would never mentally abuse someone. What Max had been through, in his youth created who he is now. When Max and I entered the paddock a few Grand Prix's back I could hear fans boo at him. He became the most hated driver of the current grid. But Max always kept his head cool, because he knew despite of e hate he had my father's back and those who were his fans since the beginning. The bus had started driving it was just a few stops, till we get home. Max then told me the day we first met. I was just little and he was just new to the team. He told me that Christian asked me to grab him something to drink. But that I tripped over my own dress and spilled the drink all over him. I smiled a little, I really did that. I wasn't clumsy at all, but the dress was a little too big for me at the time. Max then suddenly changed the topic. 'Maddy you're turning 18 in a few days. What would you like for your birthday?' He then said. I didn't know what I wanted, I was spoiled. 'Uhm. The best present will be, all of us together.' I told him. 'Definitely.' Max said.
The bus came to an halt and we got off. The last bit we walked. The streets were quiet and the sun was shining. A soft breeze blew through my long dark brown hair. When we arrived at my father's house. My dad was standing on the driveway. 'Where are the girls?' He asked us. 'They went home.' Max told him. Christian nodded slowly. And then let us in. I told my father I wanted to change clothes and headed upstairs. I glanced at Max who talked to my father. I didn't know I was lucky to have a connection like this with Max. But I would never if dad didn't introduce him us.
