Chapter 6: Consolation

I think it's been about 15 minutes, and I don't hear anything. Maybe it's safe to act? Right as I was about to grab for the swiss army knife in my pocket, I hear movement, and N drops into the pod, right, J did tell him to check periodically on me. "Hey... you doing ok? Not... uh... escaping, or anything, right?" N says, while giving off a nervous chuckle, clearly upset about having to be my jailor. "I'm fine, N. Doing as good as I can, for someone who's stranded on this planet, with no way home..." He gives me a sympathetic look. And, honestly, I keep forgetting, but whenever I think about it, I remember that even though I'm staying at this bunker, my life has completely changed in the matter of days. I really do have no way home, at least, nothing I can imagine. Even if I do go back to Earth, it's 3071, everything I would have known or recognized is either long gone, or unrecognizable.

N sees that I'm clearly down in the dumps, but tries to cheer me up. "Hey, I know that things are rather... bad for you right now. I couldn't imagine never seeing my family again, not that I really had much of one. The only people I've known my whole life are V and J, and this human girl named Tessa, who I know took care of us, though a lot of details are really fuzzy." I look at him, seeing the distant gaze in his eyes. He's known V and J for essentially his whole life, and was taken care of by a girl named Tessa? Wow, they must all be pretty lonely then, stuck here, even though they're 3 altogether, they don't seem to get along at all.

N suddenly speaks up again. "They're not so bad... V and J... they're just both stressed, as far as I can tell, mostly J. I don't remember a whole lot about before, but neither of them seem to want to tell me anything. J's really committed to doing a good job, she wants to be someone that people can depend on, and... as upset as she gets, it's just because she wants to do a good job, and get everything done by the books. She just gets fed up with both me and V, and doesn't really have a good way to take out her frustrations." I looked at N with intrigue, he's clearly still annoyed with both of them, but I can see now that he still cares for them in a way, despite how they're treating him. He's a nice guy.

N continued speaking. "And V... well, V was really sweet when I first met her, but.. at some point she changed, but apparently she never did. She just concealed her emotions a lot, but started opening up bit by bit, and well... you see how she is. She... from what I can remember, her past wasn't the greatest, but she'd never tell me anything. Sometimes she'd start coming on to me, but... I don't know, I just didn't like it, and she got upset at me. She's... she has special needs that she wants fulfilled, but has had a hard time finding someone to fulfill those needs. And, when I disappointed her, she was still her same old, uh... psychotic self, but I could tell that she was upset.

But... when I saw her face when she brought you back here earlier, she seemed happier. I know that she said some weird things to you when we all first saw you, and that you only just met, and that she has a bit of a dirty mind, and is very crass and blunt... but I think she actually likes you. She just has her own way of showing it, I... I could never accept it, and I feel terrible for disappointing her, but I think she saw something in you, or in your eyes, that resonated with her. She has a knack for that, actually. She's good at figuring out someone's thoughts or feelings after looking them in the eyes for a moment. And... as much as it hurts me to have to let her go, she wouldn't be happy with me and what I want, but I think she'd be happy if you gave her a chance. I don't know how it would all turn out, but... even though I can't say I truly love her anymore, I do still care about her, and I want her to be happy."

Wow... that was a lot to unpack, he really does care about both of them. Man... it's hard to deal with this, they're going through all these emotions, and they're forced to be monsters, slaughtering other drones. I mean... V's clearly psychotic and unhinged, and she's clearly somebody that loves violence and destruction, but... the way she acted towards me... I guess makes sense after what N told me. She's unhinged, and very forward, but she wasn't cruel, at least not as cruel as K was...
