AviannaIt was a surprisingly relaxed day, and I was determined to keep it that way. No calls from Royce or his lawyer, smooth business operations—finally, I wasn't on the short end of the stick for once. Keisha's incessant Facebook taunts seemed to have come to a halt, so my day was off to a solid start.
"Hmm, you're positively radiant today, Avi," Dyla complimented, eliciting a warm smile from me. Perhaps it was the morning meditation and prayers that contributed to this feeling of invincibility. Usually, my days were far from pleasant, but today was different. Today, I truly felt the power of black girl magic.
"Thank you so much. I'm feeling fantastic. How about you?" I inquired as Dyla took a seat in the middle chair, positioned in front of my desk.
She crossed her legs, sporting a cynical smile that brought a chuckle out of me.
"Girl, Mike lives to tell another tale of his straightness, but that's beside the point. Let me tell you about the detective who paid us a visit while you were away!" Dyla exclaimed, her voice filled with enthusiasm, causing me to bury my face in my hands, embarrassed by her unabashed excitement. I could already imagine the way she beamed, reminiscent of a teenage girl seeing her crush.
"Was he attractive?" I asked, feigning interest in her conversation about some random man while I clicked through my emails.
Dyla raised her eyebrow with utmost seriousness. "Listen, the whole time he was talking, I was mentally searching for a marriage loophole. But let me tell you, he was tall, and his skin had the most delicious Hershey chocolate shade. It made me want to lick until I reached the center of that tootsie pop," she explained, prompting laughter from both of us as I envisioned how he must have looked.
"Excuse me, Ms. Silver?" I heard a voice, and when I turned, I was met with a strikingly handsome man.
"Yes, that's me," I replied, feeling a mix of surprise and intrigue. Dyla swiftly rose from her seat.
"Um, would you like some Hershey chocolates?" she offered, leaving me puzzled.
She smiled at the mysterious man, and when he turned away, she subtly pointed at him, mouthing the words "that's him." My curiosity piqued, I raised an eyebrow and found myself captivated by the Adonis who stood before me, flashing his impeccably clean pearly whites. Standing at an estimated six foot two, his muscular frame was accentuated by a casual black Levi's jeans and a well-fitted tee shirt. With a pair of Jordan sneakers, he seemed like an ordinary man who struck it rich, but the badge around his neck indicated otherwise.
"Yes, that's me. How can I assist you?" I inquired as he took the seat Dyla had occupied.
"My name is Officer McCoy, and I stopped by yesterday," he explained, prompting me to glance behind him, where Dyla was subtly grinding against the door frame, causing me to stifle a snicker and alerting him to look behind him, making her abruptly stop.
"Would you like something to drink? Hot chocolate, perhaps? Or maybe a black coffee?" she inquired, a mischievous smirk tugging at my lips as he turned his attention back to me, chuckling.
"Just get two waters, Dyla," I ordered her, and she left, redirecting my attention back to Officer McCoy.
"She'll be back soon. So, how can I assist you, Officer? All my licenses are up to date," I assured him, but he shook his head.
There were a few actions I had taken in the past that weighed on my conscience, but it was all part of the business. Despite the current state of harmony among my sisters and me, we shared a tumultuous history, marked by a trail of blood that could have filled an entire trilogy. Family secrets lingered in the shadows. After having Riley, I had to set things straight and utilize my degree in a legitimate manner.
