Burning throat as if she swallowed fire who was just lit, ringing ears which successfully managed to mute her surroundings, the rising of two ribcages as weak as a few sticks glued together. She had nothing left. Who was she now? Did she have the right to exist when the people who have brought her to this world had sent words of half thought goodbyes?
Leia couldn't breath, even if her rapidly beating heart was an indicator that she was still what doctors would consider "alive" she knew that the body was the one to stay, but her mind and soul had already left her.Nurses, doctors and all the personals in that small hospital rushed from one place to another doing whatever they could to prevent the worse from happening. Alongside them stood small children in overly used hospital gowns which were crumpled, teenagers who were dressed much the same, but were cursed to know what all the chaos were all about, adults who sighed and some who prayed.
All in the name of the sunshine like human being, one that replaced the natural rays on a lucky day for the patients, the girl who brought smiles to everyone, who had always bore one on her own face, never shedding as much as a tear, but her whimpering could be heard from within closed doors of her hospital room each and every time she had to send a friend away. That girl was laid on the cold metal table, looking like a porcelain doll with long blonde hair which covered the parts who were lacking any, eyes that were now closed. At one sight anyone would think that time had just stopped to save the moment of her being, a child that knew nothing but pain and yet offered all the happiness, warmth and kindness to everyone around it.
Even fate knew that Leia deserved better than she was assigned with. Maybe that was also the reason why a tiny bit of her sanity was left behind after she had awakened.- Leia! Oh, Leia! My girl! Are you okay now? - Annie, the nurse and her personal caretaker as the director of the hospital has made her be, stood on the chair next to Leia's hospital bed, ready to attend to any of her needs.
- Who....are you? - the girl had asked, eyes as deep as a haunted forest, but without any fireflies, one in which Annie had always found comfort in. Instinctively, the woman let her mouth fall open, covering it quickly with her left hand as soon as she had realized her actions.
- Do you not remember me, Leia? - she had asked carefully as if stepping on a broken pieces of glass which wasn't far from the truth, except the pieces that were to lay around all belonged to what was left of Leia's consciousness.
- I do not remember your name, miss, but I do seem to recognize your face...you must be....my mom! - the girl exclaimed happily, birds seemed to chirp all around her. She had just opened her eyes and have been met by the person that loved her the most, wasn't that the case?
Annie didn't have it in her to explain the situation of Leia to her again, given the latest news and what they brought to the poor girl, the brunette nurse was ready to bare it all and play pretend if she had to. She gently wrapped her arms around the small girl, Leia answered to the hug right away, a smile, never to have been seen before played on her lips as she tasted the sweetness of a mother's love, even if it wasn't real. The day went by quickly for the both of them full of different activites to engage in. It started off with drawing which slightly frightened Annie, because of Leia's drawings of black shadow like figures, then followed by a silly tea party that the nurse had organized for the girl to socialize only brought looks of both worry and uneasiness as Leia jumped off her sit on the table to chase after blue butterflies which she swore were all around them and finished with walks through the corridors filled with a voice of both pleasent melody and sudden whimpering. Annie couldn't tell if it was just because of the shock that the girl had been inflicted on which still remained or Leia had genuinely lost all of her touch with their shared reality, but no matter what the answer to her worries were, she knew, she wanted to be this child's mother and she was to do anything for her as long as Leia's frail heart was beating.
After the long day, Annie had put Leia to sleep, tenderly tugging the girl in her puffy blanket, as she turned around to leave the sheets she had changed earlier to wash up, the nurse heard muttering.
It didn't take her long to guess it was Leia's voice. When Annie turned around she saw the child with shut tightly eyes and trembling lips which allowed to let a sentence escape through them..."I beg of you, take me with you, ... Annie."
