"you're talking to her," renjun stated without question.

"i want to crawl into a deep hole and lay there so i don't have to show my face to her ever again," donghyuck mumbled. "now, for real, pass me a cigarette."

renjun patted his pockets. "i don't have any. i quit months ago, anyway."

donghyuck sighed and rummaged through a drawer until he pulled out a box and took a lighter from his pocket. he stuck a cigarette between his lips and flicked the lighter a couple of times before fire appeared and lit the end of it.

"at least open the window," renjun snapped, opening wide one of the windows. "you know you should also quit. jeno did and so did mark."

"mark vapes i don't know what you're on about," donghyuck dismissed.

"anyways, sort this shit out. at this point we're just going in circles so for the sake of my sanity please communicate to rin. we've all apologised and spoken to her so i think you should too."

"yes, dad."

renjun rolled his eyes. "see you later. if you decide to decide to see some sunlight today that is." he left donghyuck's room.

since he didn't shut the door all the way, donghyuck threw a pillow at it and it slammed closed. he let out a sigh and opened the window next to his bed for the ashes to fall through to the ground below.

later that evening, he showered and got dressed into a t-shirt, jacket and jeans before heading out to see the guys. they agreed to all go to a party together.

donghyuck paced around the flower shop looking at different bouquets and what would fit best. big, expensive ones were unnecessary but a small one would sound insignificant. that's when it came to him; her favourite flowers were sunflowers. so, knowing that, he picked up a bunch of them and paid before strolling out of the shop and heading in the direction of the moon household.

upon arrival, donghyuck froze at the door.

what if this was a bad idea?

he raked a hand through his hair nervously.

eventually, he knocked on the door and tapped his foot as he waited for someone to open the door. to his surprise it was hyerin.

"hey..." he mumbled.

hyerin, shocked to see donghyuck in front of her, didn't know what to say so she moved out of the way for him to help himself in.

"wh- what are you doing here?" she cleared her throat.

"i came to... speak to you." he spun to face her. "do you have a place for these?"

she took the sunflowers from his hand and went to grab a tall glass and filled it with water. "do you want something to drink?"

"no, thank you." he sat on the sofa and rubbed his hands together.

when hyerin came back, she looked at him then his hands. "do you want to talk in my room? no one's home but," she shrugged, "up to you."

jeju catwalked in.

"no, we can talk here it's fine." he leaned back on the sofa.

hyerin took a seat next to him and there was silence for a singular second.

"okay, what do you want because i dont think i can do this small talk for much longer?"

"i'm... i'm sorry, hyerin. i'm so sorry." his eyes almost welled up with tears. "i don't know how many apologies will make up to you but i know it'll never be enough for not being there for you. i am so sorry."

"i know." she spoke. "and i forgive you."

"why? after all i did and didn't do for you? how i treated you?"

"because all i wanted was you in my life. i don't want you to be away from it any longer, donghyuck. all i needed was an apology from you."

he scooted closer to her. "can i get a hug?"

she opened her arms with a smile and he wrapped his arms around her, head on her shoulder and a tear falling.

"i want us to go back to the same way it was."

"i don't think that'll be possible with everything that happened. at least it'll take some time," she explained.

"it's okay. i understand." he hugged her a little tighter as another tear fell.

her embrace felt so warm. hugging her body felt so right. he couldn't believe what she'd gone through and she was still standing.

"donghyuck," she strained. "i can't breathe."

he didn't even realise how tightly he'd been holding onto her.

"i'm sorry." he let go and wiped his eyes with his sleeves.

"why are you crying, huh?" she cooed and moved his hair away from his face.

"because... i feel like shit, rin. i hate myself. and i hate that it happened to you. whenever i think about it, i get this ball of rage that starts to form. i can't explain it to you."

"i get it, hyuck. i also hated myself and i hate that it happened to me but i've seeked help and i'm stronger. i can talk about it now although i choose not to."

his eyed widened. "i'm sorry. i brought it up."

"it's okay." she smiled. "anyway, do you want to stay for dinner? we can watch a movie, too."

he nodded. "you want help in the kitchen?"

"please?"

it would take time for things to go back to how they were but they were heading on a good path.
