When my eyes opened again and I realised I was still alive, I closed them and wished for death. But death never comes when you want it to. A soft hold on my hand made me stiffen. I didn't have to open my eyes to know it was her. There was always something about the way she touched me. She could touch my soul too, and we would become one. I would feel alive again.
As her fingers slid against mine, I felt the warm tears slip down the side of my face. "I think I've told you already how much I hate seeing you cry." She said calmly. Why was she so calm? Wasn't she just infuriated?
I drew a deep breath, trying to stop the tears from flowing, but it barely worked. My fingers locked tightly around hers, and I risked looking at her. She didn't look upset or angry. She just looked worried and really scared. The sight made my heart ache.
"How are you feeling?" She asked, clasping my hands between hers and bringing it up to her face. She barely brushed the side of her face with it as she waited for my answer, but already I longed to feel that smoothness of her skin again.
"You came back."
"I had a sense of you needing me."
"Did you get my text? I'm sorry-"
"We'll talk about that later." She cut me off gently. "After we know that you're okay."
"She is okay." I heard stealing my attention. I look up and it's the LaRues walking into the room. Carrie came in behind them. Wait...am I alive? Is this a dream? Am I home? How the fuck-
"Yes, we are in your house. All of us and no, this is not a dream, and you are not dead" Grace told me.
"We are about to check on your baby if you don't mind us invading your personal space a little bit." Steph joined in.
I cringed at the word baby as Steph said it. Drea tensed but she didn't release my hand. I didn't risk looking at her as I watched Emilie and Sierra roll in a machine and a chair. Where did they even get that thing and what is that?
Grace came up to the other side of my bed putting some tubes down on the nightstand. She gloved her hands while she watched me. I gulped. "What are you doing?"
"I am going to do an abdominal ultrasound."
"No, you're not."
Emilie had the machine in place and was trying to get it to work now. Grace mounted the chair Sierra brought and my heartbeat quickened. I felt myself beginning to panic. I do not want to see it. I don't... "I don't want an ultrasound."
"You're pregnant and you're having vaginal bleeding still you don't want to know if your baby is alive? Not even a little?" Sierra asked, baffled.
"She doesn't care for it." Carrie provided.
I glared at her. "Why are you still here? Look," I tell all of them. "I know you mean well and you're trying to help, but I just want to get back to work, please. My project is due in twenty-five hours, and I need to finish."
"Forget the project. I'll cover for you." Carrie assured.
"No! This is the biggest project I've had since I got back and Caroline, you will not touch it."
"Julia, you need to prioritise what's more important-"
"I am prioritising what is more important."
"You're prioritising the wrong thing," Emilie told me flatly.
Carrie nodded her agreement. "I don't know how you guys deal with her. She's been driving me crazy."
That statement, I ignored because if I address it I will be ripping her head off her body!!! Instead, I spoke very calmly. "With all due respect, Emilie... This is my life. I can do what I want with it, and I decide what's more important to me."
