Would he ever, in this lifetime, love someone that much again?

Fu Changling dashed towards the Lanyue Palace, and the fox quickly caught up with him. Seeing the fox in close pursuit, Fu Changling didn't care if Qin Yan was resting or not and hurried straight to Qin Yan's bedchamber. As soon as he entered, he saw Qin Yan sitting on the bed, meditating. He rushed straight up behind Qin Yan, gripped his clothes, and then looked at the oncoming fox and yelled to him, "Shīxiōng, help!"

The fox followed Fu Changling into the bedchamber, stopping sharply after Fu Changling hid behind Qin Yan. As it came to a sudden halt, its claws made an ear-piercing scraping sound on the floor. When Qin Yan heard this sound, he frowned and opened his eyes to stare at the fox in front of him, saying with some displeasure, "Da Hua."

Da Hua immediately showed a wronged expression and whimpered, nuzzling its head in Qin Yan's face. Qin Yan reached out and stroked its head, and Da Hua instantly became pleased. While stroking Da Hua, who was wiggling back and forth under his palm and switching positions to be petted, Qin Yan said to Fu Changling, "Get off."

Fu Changling knew this was being said to him. He was a bit embarrassed to let go of Qin Yan and apologised as he climbed off Qin Yan's bed.

Da Hua snarled at him as soon as he stepped down. Qin Yan warned and called Da Hua's name, "Da Hua."

As soon as Da Hua was called out by Qin Yan, it immediately started to whimper and played nice again. Fu Changling knew that he was disliked, so he stood a little farther to the side. After smoothing Da Hua's fur for a while, Qin Yan asked, "What did you go after?"

Hearing this question, Da Hua seemed to have just remembered its earlier task. It rubbed itself against Qin Yan's hand and ran out after giving a little whimper.

After Da Hua ran out, Qin Yan took a handkerchief from his sleeve and slowly wiped his hands. Fu Changling chuckled somewhat awkwardly. "So, Da Hua is Shīxiōng's spirit pet, huh?"

"Mm," replied Qin Yan flatly, "its name is Jifeng."

A little surprised, Fu Changling couldn't help but utter, "Ah?"

Isn't it named Da Hua?

Qin Yan seemed to know what Fu Changling wanted to ask and explained, "I picked it up when it was still small. I mistook it for a big tabby cat, so I named it Da Hua. Later on, I heard from someone somewhere that the name Da Hua is bad. Except for myself and Shīfu, it would bite whoever called it by that name. So Shīfu gave him a new name, and you shall call it Jifeng from now on."

Fu Changling was intrigued when he heard this. "When did you pick it up, Shīxiōng?"

"Nine years ago."

"You're eight, and you still can't tell a fox from a cat?" blurted Fu Changling out. Qin Yan fell silent. Immediately realising that he had said the wrong thing, Fu Changling quickly remedied the situation. "It's also fairly normal. After all, these furry creatures all look alike."

This remedial measure, however, was too lame, and Qin Yan was clearly unwilling to respond. For a brief while, Fu Changling felt embarrassed. He craned his head to look at the moon archway next to him, then stared down at the floor and hummed a tune as if nothing was wrong.

Luckily, Da Hua came running back soon afterwards. It returned with a piece of fabric in its mouth and an eager-to-please look on its face. First, it circled Fu Changling and then went to rub itself against Qin Yan's bedside.

Qin Yan took the fabric from Da Hua's mouth and held it in his palm to examine it quietly. Noticing Qin Yan's serious expression, Fu Changling raised his gaze and looked over.
