Darkness wrapped around me. I struggled to reach the lone light bulb swiveling in the distance. It provided the only contrast to the surrounding blackness. The brightness of the light in front of me stung my eyes, immediately giving me a sense of relief. Although I had been given one of my senses back, I still didn’t know where I was.
A vibrating growl erupted from behind me, causing of my body to lose control. Absent mindedly, I whirled around on my toes, realizing I wasn’t wearing my causal clothing anymore. Instead, they were replaced with fancy fabric that tightened around my slim body. It was a dark purple strapless gown with black linings in the shape of tulips patterned the dress. I gasped.
A voice echoed in my ear, “I will find you again…I’ll see you soon, my lovely.” Then the light flickered and the darkness swallowed me up once again
My eyes popped open, and met the gray eyes of a dog. I sighed, waved the dog away and started shoving my dreadlocks out of my face. I was starting to feel frustrated with my strange, reoccurring dream that I experienced every time I fell asleep.
I decided to call him Smarty the day he found me wandering around lost in the woods with no memory. I was only thirteen at the time. It’s been four years now, and I had nobody else but him, my best friend. I knew Smarty actually understood me; with my voice or without.
Smarty was a rather strange looking dog. His black fur was as soft as silk, strands of white stripes went across his back to the tip of his thick tail and his large grey eyes were mesmerizing. His furry ears pointed straight up, and his large white paws never made a sound.
The street was already buzzing loudly with commuter life - cell phones rang, the clacking of shoes filled the air, cars honked at each other, and the busy pedestrians walked in their separate directions. A fat man bumped into me when I walked out of the alley. He grunted at me while waving two donuts in his hands, a third crumbling in his mouth. My upper lip curled in disgust.
I scoffed. “What’s wrong with people these days?”
Across the street was Jim’s Diner: a small maroon wooden building with a red roof and big windows. The owner Jim let me work for him to earn a small amount of money or food (paid under table, of course). Jim was in his early thirties, with medium dark skin that makes his already big muscles even bigger, strawberry brown hair, a scrubby unshaved beard, and green eyes. If I must say, he was an immature yet brilliant man. A young waiter who worked at the Diner, Daisy, unhinged her jaw when Smarty and I walked in.
“Oh my, you look terrible! Go into the washroom and clean yourself up, I will have your food ready when you come out.” She shooed me away.
I looked into the mirror and frowned, Daisy was right. I looked like I’ve ran into bushes and drowned in a mud. My long tangled dreadlocks were coated in dirt and twisting in different directions. People stared at me strangely because my hair is completely white, and some think I bleached my hair but I didn’t. I had no idea why my hair is like that. My eyes were huge and golden yellow color. I swear, I don’t wear fake colored contacts, but Jim refused to believe m. He teased me of being a freak in front of the Diner to piss me off. Thousands of freckles danced on my smooth skin which would mysteriously never bruise, cut, or bleed.
“Smarty, what’s wrong with you? Quit it before they make me attach you to a pole. Do you want that? I think not.” I glared at him. Smarty huffed at the door and looked at me with worried gray eyes. Not understanding what his problem was. I opened the door, the smell of food filling my nose. My stomach roared in hunger.
