Three

---------------------------------

After hours of walking in the darkness, I could finally make out a small path in front of me, but only finding myself falling off a cliff. I screamed and screamed as the ocean roared. Finally my body slammed into the cold water, pricking my skin as the water pulled me deep and deeper. I was drowning! I struggled to get to the surface and I felt my body starting to give up, but suddenly a hand came out of nowhere and jerked me violently out of the water. As the air hits my lungs, I passed out.

Covered with cold sweats, my eyes popped open in a dark room, I roamed my hands around; I felt a thick fur brushed against my hands. “Smarty…” I croaked. “Oh, I just had a terrible dream.” My tears swelled up.

“Are you awake…?” The voice came from right next to me.

I jumped and realized I have been sleeping on a bed. I scrambled quickly to get off. The lights came on and I suddenly got dizzy. I felt so weak; my legs wobbled and a strong arm wrapped around my waist carefully and led me to the bed. I slowly worked my eyes from bottom to up and widened my eyes, my jaws dropped to the floor. His grey eyes were so familiar! The color of his tanned skin was so beautiful, his shirtless chest exposed and his jet black long hair stopped by his shoulders. He hesitated to say something, then looked away from me, shoved his fingers in his hair.

“Who are you?” I asked softly.

“Davis,” he grumbled, “or you can call me Smarty.”

I couldn’t believe it, he softened his glares, “I have been protecting you since the day I found you.” He explained slowly.

“What kind of a sick joke is this?!” I shouted, jumping off the bed and my eyes searching the room. It was small and plain room, there was a single window covered with black curtain, the hard marble floor painted in checkered black and white, and a black door.

“What have you done to Smarty?!”

Davis only watched me in silence.

“Don’t make me ask you again. Where. Is. Smarty?!” I yelled, clearly pissed.

Davis only closed his long black eyelashes and his body began to vibrate or from what I was seeing, he was practically glowing. I took a step back, he opened his grey eyes once again while his body glowed even more and his black hair grew longer; a white stripe appeared on his hair. His hands formed into fists, he hunched over, slowly his face begun to change. I blinked, bewildered. “What the h---” I couldn’t finish my sentence as I met Smarty’s grey eyes as he sat down on the floor looking up at me. My legs gave up and my knees crashed on the hard floor, I tried to think of something to say.

A few minutes passed without us saying anything.

“Okay… I think I want some explanations right now,” I whispered.

My body felt sore, I melted in a black chair and waited while Davis returned to his human form.  There was a reflection of myself on the floor, I studied myself. ‘I looked like a crap,’ I thought. My eyes were tired and I wanted to close my eyes and go to sleep.

“Hey… Are you okay?” Davis’s voice startled me.

I almost forgot that I wasn’t alone, “Y-Yeah, just feeling a little tired.” I avoided looking in his worried eyes. He frowned and stepped closer to me, my body felt so weak and I knew there was something wrong with me but I didn’t want to admit.

“Did that man touch you in the alley?” He asked me.

“I…I don’t remember, why does it matter anyway?” I spoke sheepishly.

“That man, I believe, have been looking for you over a year.” Davis paused then took a deep breath. “He is the Alp who controls his victims’ dreams and creates a horrible nightmares. And that is the reason why you are feeling tired right now, he got too close to you but I grabbed you before he could fully paralyze you.”

I stared at him in awe, “Are you serious?” I scoffed, “Why is he even after me?”

Davis turned around and walked to the window, lifting up the black curtain. I noticed it was a night time. My patience was running out but I decided to let that one slip because Davis looked like he didn’t want to answer any more of my questions.

Again, a few moment of silence, I cleared my throat; he looked at me sudden like I have just stabbed him.

“This isn’t fair, why can’t I know anything?” My voice cracked. I glanced back down at the floor, trying to not to cry but failed. I sobbed quietly, “I don’t even know who I am or where I am from.”

A gentle hand on my shoulder made me look up with tears in my eyes. Davis’s jaws clenched then relaxed, “I am sorry, I do not have the permission to explain you any further.”

I opened my mouth to object but I stopped after Davis’s body begun to glow again. I sighed, he was transforming back to Smarty who wagged his tail and licked my hand. I guess I have to start to get used to the idea of Smarty being as a dog and also as Davis.

Smarty walked to the door and barked at me. I followed him and opened the door for him, like always, and headed out of the room.
