It was 1990. You learned quickly under Kishibe. Too quickly, in fact. Kishibe just brushed it off as being a good teacher. He never beat around the bush and training was rough, though he never took it too far. As for the Devil Hunter who was in the room when you first met Makima, he, unfortunately, has been killed by a lesser devil.

You and Kishibe were standing in a graveyard. The place was filled with gravestones of the victims of devil attacks and, especially, the Gun Devil. You took out a cigarette and lit it up, while Kishibe took out his hip flask.

Kishibe: "This concludes your training. You are now a certified badass," he said as he took a sip of his flask.

Y/n: "Already? Man, it feels like just yesterday. So what now? Am I free to go hunt devils on my own without supervision," you asked, inhaling your cigarette.

Kishibe: "Not quite. I've brought you here not only to relax but to wait for someone you will be working with. You will soon be the captain of the new Tokyo Special Division 4," he said.

Y/n: "So I am going to be mentoring this person as you mentored me," you questioned.

Kishibe: "Something like that," he took another sip of his flask.

A few minutes pass in silence. A car parks nearby and a young woman steps out.

Y/n: "Is she the one I'm working with," you asked Kishibe in a whisper.

The woman walked up to us and bowed.

???: "Nice to meet you. My name is Himeno. I'll be in your care," she spoke enthusiastically with a smile, but her eyes told a different story.

You were thinking that she must be another victim of the Gun Devil who was crazy enough to take up arms against the devils. She had a bandaged eye, so she must have recently made a contract with a devil as part of joining the Devil Hunters. Makima was kind enough to vouch for you so you were not obligated to form a contract with a devil, not that you could anyway.

Y/n: "Hello, junior Himeno. My name is L/n Y/n. A pleasure to make your acquaintance," you said with elegance.

Himeno: "I guess I'll be your partner from now on. I promise I won't hold you back," she said with a fake smile.

A couple of years pass. You and Himeno have grown closer together. She opened up a lot since then. She had a bubbly personality and loved to drink. For better or for worse, she picked up your smoking habits and is now addicted. You've exchanged kisses with her on multiple occasions but never went any further than that.

Himeno: "Hey, Y/n, let's go out drinking again tomorrow," she offered.

You and Himeno shared the same apartment complex, so you two were out shopping together for the week's groceries at the market.

Y/n: "Again? What's the occasion," you asked since you already went with her just to drink the day prior.

Himeno: "Apparently, I can now get my first partner," she explained. "They will be assigned to me tomorrow, so all of us to go out drinking to celebrate."

Y/n: "Good for you. In that case, sure. Same izakaya around the evening," you asked.

Himeno: "Yep," she said with excitement.

It was 1994. Himeno has been broken again by her last partner's death. They sure do seem to drop like flies. You tried offering help, but she insists that she was okay.

One day, Himeno was assigned a young man named Aki Hayakawa. The boy came from Division 2, and he was only 16. On Makima's orders, you were tasked with supervising them and keeping them alive.

Aki and Himeno seemed to get along well, even though Himeno was disappointed that Aki was a minor and couldn't drink. You and Aki weren't very close, but he did seem to respect you as his senior.

Once he became an adult, Aki was introduced to cigarettes by Himeno, among other influences. He also opened up a bit more to both you and Himeno, though he keeps his professionalism. Because of this, he quickly gained the respect of his fellow Devil Hunters and the police department alike.

Y/n: "So, kid, what is your goal," you asked Aki. "It's been two years since you became part of Special Division 4, but I've never had the chance to ask."

Aki: "You've been busy every time Himeno invited you to drink. It's only natural that you are asking now," he stated.

This is the first time you went out drinking with Aki and Himeno. You've been busy with personal tasks given to you by Makima herself. The only times you were together with them were during missions. Other times, you've been training new Devil Hunters.

Aki: "My ultimate goal is to find and kill the Gun Devil. I'm sure you and everyone at HQ have lost something or someone to the Gun Devil, including me. That's why I have to find it to prevent any more losses like we experienced that day," he spoke with bitterness.

Y/n: "That's a very noble goal. I know you don't need me to tell you this, but don't die. I've told this many times to Himeno and all of the recruits," you said as you patted Aki's back. "I won't ask how you plan to defeat such a terrifying being, but you can always count on your seniors. So when you do encounter the Gun Devil, rely on us to back you up. You're stuck with us so might as well."

Himeno was sleeping on the table next to Aki. She drank herself to sleep, which you expected to happen. You all finished eating at the izakaya and then started to head to your respective homes. You and Himeno live next to each other, so you had to take her home. Unbeknownst to you, your life as a Devil Hunter was about to get revved up.
