Anita hoped this wouldn't ruin the friendship between her and Maria. She loved the girl don't get her wrong but she wants her to date another Puerto Rican,not Tony. Yet she knew that trying to get her to do that was pretty much pointless and is what led to the argument they had in the first place. Maria was right about something. She was right when she told her that from what she could imagine what led that boy to end Bernardo was probably the result of Bernardo ending someone who that boy cared about dearly.
But in Anita's mind her love Bernardo wouldn't be capable of such a thing. She missed Bernardo so much already. And although she was upset,it was wrong of her to lie. She knows better than to do that and she knows better than to try to control who Maria chose as a life partner. She was old enough to make her own decisions in life. Anita knew better than to let her grief over Bernardo make her try to prevent Maria from choosing her lover. She knew better than to make her friend's love's peril even worse than it already was.
