"James. Put your phone away and listen. This is very important and you must remember what I'm about to say."
Looking up from his phone, James can see that the small room of people are now all looking at him, waiting for him to adhere to this person's order.
"Yes, sir." James takes one last look at his mobile before sneaking it into his pocket and turning to face the people again.
"Thank you, James. As I was saying, since our next meeting is fast approaching, we just practice on our training and reconciliation with business partners to maintain stable partnerships, especially for you, Eugene and of course you know this because of our phone call last night but..." Charles trails off in his speech and the whole room goes silent, waiting for what he'll say next.
"James. Will you put that damn phone away?" Charles' eye twitches as he leans forward to convey his point to James.
Again James looks up from his phone slowly, eyes glued to the screen of his phone until they drag and look towards Charles, strangely unfazed by Charles' growing temper.
"Sure", he confirms as he places the phone down beside him on the carpeted floor and fixing his sitting position to sitting with a more open and attentive posture. "As you were saying, Mr. Choi?""Yes, as I was saying, in order for us to succeed in my plans we must take precautions of the highest degree. We cannot let it slip that this is happening— I'm thanking you all for being here today and keeping this information private, even you, James." Charles looks over towards James suddenly and immediately sighs loudly, drowning the whole room in uneasiness.
"James. Would you just give me that phone? You're disturbing everyone." Charles then stands up and stalks over to James, holding out his arm so he could receive James' phone. He waits a few seconds and finally the phone is given up to him.
"I don't understand what's so important about your phone— this meeting is vital to our success and if you could just listen then everything would—""Yeah yeah, I get it, old man." James' annoyance slips out accidentally as all heads in the room turn to him. Even Eugene is shocked at the awkwardness in the atmosphere as he resorts to cleaning his circular framed glasses with the corner of his shirt. Charles didn't even react to James' rude comment as he just walked away from where he was standing earlier and placed the phone on a tall cabinet, away from anyone's sight.
"Thank you, James. Again, as I was saying, there's a necessary shift in our attention of what we were previously doing. If success is our main goal, which it is, we must cling to the idea that we could get caught at any moment— which is why we must move primarily in the shadows. I don't want any of this written down, so please, remember as best as you can. No word of this leaves the room." Charles circles around the small gathering of people, keeping his head up and looking towards the ceiling. "If anyone were to find out... well, I won't discuss that openly. But we're all distinguished individuals who are well versed in... violence. I think we all know."
Charles then settles at the window and turns around to face all the people in the room. "I think that sums it up. You're all free to go. And I think I'd like to make the rule clear and known that there will be no phones, again." Charles smiles and straightens his shirt with one hand as he turns to face the only source of light, which was the window. "Goodbye everyone. Meet here again soon and don't get into trouble."
As soon as Charles had given everyone the heads up that the meeting was over, James rushed towards the tall cabinet to retrieve his cellular device. He inserts the simple passcode, your birthday- but scrambled (so you'd never open his phone), and starts his routine check of seeing whether you'd texted or not. He stares blankly at his phone for a few seconds before registering that you had not texted. His gaze is still fixed on his phone as he sees your status on the messaging app— last seen at 14:02, about the time you had left school. His heart pounds as he counts any and all possibilities of this situation before his phone is snatched out of his hand by Gun.
Gun catches a look at the phone's screen and all its details moments for being sucker punched in the nose. "Dammit, James... who's that? She's pretty cute." His voice is muffled as he holds the middle part of his face, still surprised at the earlier photo of you as James' Home Screen background.
The phone had fallen to the floor during all of the ruckus and was now picked up by Goo, who lifted up his glasses to his forehead to get a better look at the screen. "Yeah.. she's totally my style~ too bad she doesn't text back!" Goo's laughter is heard as James pushes his hair back from his eyes and picks up his phone from the floor, where it was just dropped again, totally ignoring the now-bickering duo as he eyes his phone. He'd received no text from you, but a notification from his email had shown him an offer in his inbox- a huge discount to a widely known theme-park which was just outside of his budget. If he could steal some money from someone he fought then he could get tickets, and he'd only go with one other person, of course.
Standing up off the carpeted floor, James picks up his school duffel bag and begins his walk home, though it's a much longer walk than usual because of the detour he takes to go to your house and stand outside for a few minutes, admiring the pale yellow light of your bedside lamp behind the closed lace curtains which meant you were doing some bedtime reading, like you always did. He smiles at the thought as he turns away from your house, not realising that you were eventually up all night, emailing back-and-forth to your new acquaintance.
