I pulled my hoodie closer to my body. The morning was cold and covered me in goose bumps. i shivered slightly as i looked beyond our walls. i looked down from the post as i heard footsteps approaching.
"what are you doing up there?" clem called out to me. i smiled down at her, "early bird gets the worm." she rolled her eyes as she looked up at me still. since losing her leg, she couldn't climb up the tower to look beyond the walls. i made my way down to her, and for a split second swore i saw a slight frown on her face.
"are you okay?" i asked. she looked off to the side for a minute before her eyes met mine. i had to look away from her eyes, they always made me nervous. "just miss my leg." i could tell she was attempting to lighten the mood.
"you're not missing much, still the same view. i like the mornings though, they remind me of before."
there were no groans and moans. just cold, and dewey grass.
she smiled a little and shrugged before turning around.
"i want to show you something." she said, her demeanor softening up a little. she led me to the greenhouse. as we opened the door i shot her a look of confusion. she just smiled and led me to a single daisy growing in a small pot.
i smiled as i approached the delicate flower. it was beautiful, and a great sight.
"did you grow it yourself?" i asked. she laughed and nodded. "i found it outside, and i figured you'd like it.." she trailed off a little, her brown eyes didn't meet mine.
"it's really sweet, clem, thank you." she smiled at me as i turned back to the flower. "now i've got to think of something to get you, maybe a wheelchair." she gasped and rolled her eyes at my comment.
"i'm kidding, although it isn't such a bad idea." she giggled, "i think i get around just fine."
the next day i went back to the green house. i contemplated on what i could give clem in return for her gift to me. suddenly an idea came to mind.
i avoided her as much as i could as i snuck around gathering supplies for her gift. i was unaware though of the confusion i was putting the girl through. when i brushed by her without uttering a word, and when she tried to talk to me i'd give short responses before finning off somewhere else to find stuff i need to put my plan into place. by the end of the day i was in my room, all the stuff i needed was sprawled out across my floor. scissors, twine, various pretty flowers that we had talked about, and tape. most of the supplies was borrowed.
i worked for about two hours on the makeshift flower crown. it wasn't perfect, but it was pretty. i smiled, satisfied at my creation. i realized that it was getting late, and i should probably head down to dinner.
i walked into the courtyard, hearing the chatter amongst my friends. i scanned the tables for clem, she was sitting with violet and louis. i smiled as i made my way towards the table.
"dude, you are late to dinner." violet said. i shrugged," i was busy."
"doing what?" louis asked. his curiosity peaked. i just smiled and shrugged. "it's a surprise."
"for me?" he asked. i laughed and rolled my eyes. "no, you're not special enough." he dramatically gasped. "so it's for someone special?" violet teased. i couldn't help but blush a little as i looked at clementine. she was watching as the event unfolded, a small smile on her face. her eyes met mine and i quickly looked away.
"someone really special."
as everyone finished eating, we all said our goodbyes and began to head for our dorms.
"clem, wait up!" i called after her. she turned around to face me, a small frown rested on her face again. i didn't like that sight, and seeing it made me frown too. "what's wrong, clem?"
"we haven't talked a lot today." she said quietly, almost like she was embarrassed to be saying it. i couldn't help but smile at her comment. how cute.
"i can make it up to you. come with me to my dorm."
"but aj," she turned around to look at the boy. he was following louis and violet, talking their ears off and the trio laughed. "i think he will be fine."
"okay, better have a good excuse for not talking to me all day."
the room had a purple tint casted on it. her favorite color was purple. she smiled as she looked around the room.
"close your eyes!" i urged her. she laughed and cover her eyes up. i made my way to the flower crown that sat on my desk.
i placed it on her head. it looked beautiful on her. although most things looked beautiful on her anyways. she smiled, "can i open up my eyes now?"
"open them!" i said. i held a small mirror out in front of her. she smiled big as she looked at her crown. "it's awesome, thank you!"
i stood there looking at her for a moment. admiring her smile, the way her eyes crinkled, her eyes that looked into mine.
"you're welcome, clem." i said, i couldn't help but look at her lips now. they looked perfect. i was dying to feel them against mine now. i looked back up at her eyes. her gaze was on my lips as well. before i realized just what i was doing, i closed the gap between us. i felt her breath pick up against my lips. i looked back at her eyes then her lips again. finally, i kissed her. she sat there for a second before kissing back.
i pulled her body closer to mine, if that was possible. we kissed for a while before we had to take a break to breathe. we still held each other close, like we were scared if we let go that the other would leave.
"i really like you, clem." i finally said. she smiled and looked at me once again. "i like you too, ivy."
i held her in my arms for the rest of the night. it was almost like things were normal. as if we were just two girls living a normal life together, in love.
in the morning, we will be back to fighting for survival, but tonight my arms are wrapped around a smaller girls waist as she sleeps.
