I don't think I slept that whole night. Every time I closed my eyes I saw the blood on Harry's face. It was haunting. I couldn't grasp that it had actually happened. But I knew that by the morning the news would be spread around town. And there was nothing I could do to bring justice to that guy's poor family. Thoughts raced through my mind. How long has this been going on? What other terrible things has he done? Does he seriously enjoy living like that? Why am I involved? Nothing could be answered at this point. My stomach churned at the idea that at any moment I could be next. The next thing I knew my alarm clock was going off. 6 am. My first day at my new school. I got up and went into the bathroom. When I looked into the mirror I noticed bruises were forming around my neck and on my forehead. I shivered as I realized they perfectly matched a hand print. I couldn't let anyone else know, or see, like Harry said, so I did my best to cover it up with makeup.
I stood out in the cold and waited for the bus. I desperately needed to get my license. But I had always put it off in the past because I had always had friends and I always just wanted to be with them. I noticed Harry standing at the end of his driveway was waiting for the bus too. He seemed a little old to still be in high school. And he definitely has his license? As the bus approached I decided the best idea was to sit in the front because if Harry even tried to be relatively close to me, I don't think he would even try anything around anyone else. But I guess I was wrong, as he climbed on the bus, he took a seat right next to me, trapping me by the window. "You know, just because of...yesterday, doesn't mean we're automatically companions. Let alone do I like you. I think it's best if we just stop everything," I lowered my voice, "I will keep my promise. No one will know. I just don't want to be apart of the next incident."
He laughed. "This is just the beginning." What the hell is that supposed to mean?
As I walked off the bus at the school, I realized I had not a clue where I was going, or what I was doing. At this point, Harry was the only person I knew here but no way in hell I was gonna ask him for any help. He tugged on the hood to my sweat shirt as I tried to walk ahead of him. "Would you knock it off?!" I spun around noticing it wasn't Harry this time.
"Nice one, Harry." The man spoke over his shoulder
Harry then appeared next to him and nodded in agreement. "Sam, meet Liam."
I waved, he nodded, then he gave me a little push. "Let's get going."
It was too early for bullshit. "Why don't you make me?"
It got silent then everyone just stared. Liam's eyes practically bulged out of his head. Next thing I know, he's slamming me againist the school wall and glaring daggers at me. Harry just stood there like it was something you saw everyday, tapping his feet and checking his wrist watch. A tear fell from my cheek and I tried so hard not to break down in front of everyone. Or the makeup I spent extra time on 30 minutes prior. A girl walked by and gave me the 'good-luck-you-need-it' look, but did nothing to help. What happened to 'stop bullying, speak up'? When Harry noticed her she instantly looked away. I noticed no one else would make eye contact with him. Maybe these guys are the real shit.
Liam broke his death stare by laughing, "You should have seen your face!" He wobbled away clutching his stomach from laughter. I forced a laugh out too but really I wasn't breathing. He startled me as he patted me on the shoulder, "You'll do just fine here, love. Now come along. I heard you're not the type of person to be late."
We made our way inside and I found my locker along with my first period class. Luckily there was no Harry or Liam but I was still alone. Which was alright, I tend to get to get things done better on my own.
"Can I sit here? I mean, this is my usual seat but I see you're in need of some new friends. Anyone who's friends with Harry and Liam can consider themselves dead. I'm Vels, by the way, and you are?"
"I'm...Sam."
"Well it's nice to meet you, Sam." She said with a smile,"New here?"
"Sadly yes.."
"As I was saying, you're brave to be talking to Liam and Harry like that."
'What do you mean?"
"Well...they're the most notorious guys you've ever seen and will ever see."
"So now what? I'm supposed to run? What should I do?"
She took a moment to think."Well I wouldn't run...or hide...I guess I wouldn't do anything.."
So I'm supposed to sit here and take it? I've only been here one day and i've already witnessed a murder and found my new bully's.
"Excuse me class." The principal came into our classroom and spoke. "there has been an accident with Mr. Goldman's son. He will not be into school today. So you are excused from class for the rest of the day."
"You wanna come over?" Vels and I said at the same time.
