☼Ashton☼

I easily forgave Luke for what we now call "The Cheese Incident," even though it was evidently my fault.

I feel bad for letting him take the blame, but at the same time, he wasn't the one covered in molten cheese.

The cheese wasn't nearly hot enough to cause potential burns, yet it felt as if I'd put my arm on a frying pan.

"You're not going to get fired." I sighed as Luke and I made our way to work the next day.

"Yes, I am! You're Chris' favorite, and i'm pretty sure he hates my guts." He groaned, bringing a hand up to rub his face.

"He doesn't hate you." I said slowly.

I wasn't actually sure if Chris hated Luke, it did look that way, but I would never admit it.

"He makes me pick out all of the leaves in the pool, knowing that i'm not even a lifeguard." He said crossing his arms, and pouting.

The lifeguards duty is to clean the pool, before we open and close, and recently we've been having storms that cause for leaves to blow into the pool.

"Maybe he's seeing if you're good enough to be a lifeguard, you never know." I shrugged, knowing that I was wrong.

The actual reason Chris makes Luke do it, is because the lifeguard staff that's supposed to be here in the mornings, is always late.

"Ha ha ha, what a funny joke that is." He mocked as we entered the main building to the pool.

We made our way to the locker room, to put our things in the lockers before heading out to the pool.

The thermometer on the wall read 95 degrees, and I almost passed out thinking about the sunburn I was bound to get.

"Dude, we should probably put on sunscreen, I didn't realize how hot it was." Luke said fanning himself.

Our walk to the pool is shaded by trees, so we never really know how hot it is until we get here.

I groaned, applying sunscreen was too much work.

"Ashton, you know you burn like a crisp, why tempt the potential skin cancer?" Luke said, noticing my inessential attitude.

"Fine, there's some in the office." I said, raising my arms in defense.

We walked the few feet to the office, and opened the door. The cold air from the oscillating fans hit us, and for a brief moment I felt almost cold. Then I remembered what the temperature outside really is.

Luke and I walked around the office, opening drawers, looking for sunscreen.

We seemed to be out, or someone wrongly removed it from the office. Chris gets mad when he can't find the sunscreen, so I wondered who would be that dumb.

"I bet one of the assholes took it." I said in irritation.

"Hey, they aren't all assholes Ash." Luke said, looking in another cabinet.

"Oh please, tell me one who's not." I said, wiping a bead of sweat from my forehead.

I was obviously referring to the senior lifeguards, but maybe I was being harsh.

"Michael." He said, before walking over to open the fringe in the office.

"You're kidding." I said, making my way over to him and closing the fridge.

"Hey! What was that for?" Luke shouted, obviously angered by my action.

"You're not allowed in our fridge, the snack bar has it's own." I said, before wincing at how arrogant I sounded.

Luke concealed how sad he actually was stuck working the snack bar, and I tried my best not to use that against him.

"You're right, they are all assholes. Including you." Luke said, pushing past me to leave.

"Wait, Luke!" I shouted, instantly feeling bad.

He had already furiously walked out of the office, leaving me with a tinge of hurt in my heart.
