Taemin had always grown up feeling very grateful for his parents. They always seemed like the perfect pair to him. Sure, they differed with what they wanted for him in the future, but they tried their best to always be supportive.

Taemin was sure that they cared about each other too. He had always seen them as the ultimate power couple. He had always told himself, he would never marry unless he found himself that looked at him the way his mom looked at his dad, or vice versa.

They were just the standard for him.

Until it all shattered.

-------

"We need to talk," his brother said. "This is serious."

He had called him late at night. Taemin had been getting ready to go to sleep.

"Oh really?" Taemin asked. "What's it about?"

"Mom and Dad are planning on separating. End goal is to divorce."

Taemin laughed. "Nice joke."

His brother didn't reciprocate. He only took a deep and sighed. "I'm not joking. They told me last night."

"What?"

"I know."

He sounded miserable. Taemin wished that he could be with him in person so they could be going through this together. Instead, they were miles and miles apart.

"You're joking," Taemin said again.

"I wish I was."

"But that can't be..."

Taemin tried to rationalize it in his mind. His parents could never separate. They were inseparable. You'd never see one without the other. They were always talking about each other. That just couldn't happen. He wondered if he was just dreaming. Maybe this was just a bad, bad dream.

"Do you want to know why?"

Taemin blinked. Wow, this dream was detailed.

"Sure," he said, his voice scratchy.

"It's not even understandable," his brother said slowly. "They told me that it's something that they decided after sitting down and talking. That it was a conscious decision."

"Are they serious?"

"I guess so."

Taemin sighed. He rubbed his eyes. Logically, he knew this was no dream, but he wanted to live in denial.

"Thanks for letting me know," he mumbled.

His brother murmured a bye and then Taemin was free. He flopped onto his bed, exhausted. His parents never bothered to tell him any of these things. In their head, he was still the innocent youngest who wouldn't be able to comprehend such complicated, deeply emotional things.

He wanted to hear it directly from his parents, but he knew that they wouldn't tell him directly.

Instead, he plugged his phone in and turned off the lights. He lay down on his bed, trying to muster some sleep from his body. With the news that his brother had given him, that was impossible.

Taemin wondered how visiting his family would be like now. There would always be some awkwardness, no? Were his parents going to live in completely different places now? Instead of taking one trip to meet both of them, he would have to take two.
