The bell rang and everyone scrambled out of their chairs struggling to get out the door first. Neither me nor Shane moved a muscle. Ms. Morris didn't bother saying a word to us. She simply stood and walked to her place in the hallway to monitor the other kids.
After a few minutes I decided it was in everybody's best interest that I leave. So I gathered my belongings and tried to hurry past Shane as fast as possible with my head down.
I was nearly there when he reached out and grabbed my wrist.
"Skye..." he barely spoke. Neither one of us looked at the other person.
"You don't have to say anything Shane," I violently pulled away, "this doesn't have to change anything. Let's just keep our life's just the way they are-"
"But what if I don't want to," he cut in.
My blank expression quickly changed. Tears had been on the edge of my eyes but now they were gone. My eyes grew wide and I had to stop my mouth from hanging.
"Let's not irrational," I chuckled as if he hadn't just said that.
"What's irrational about me wanting things to be different between-"
"Us?" I spun around, "between us?"
Our eyes were locked now and that was what I feared the most.
As soon as they met I knew there would be no separating them until one of us broke. Not till one of us completely broke.
And unfortunately Shane is stronger than me so I knew he'd out last me any day, even on one of his worst and my best. And my best days seemed to be impossible to come across these days.
"Yes between us. I mean what happened?" He asked taking my hand. I used every ounce I had in my body to try and look away from him but it was useless.
"Everything," I said a tear streaming down my face, "we went through everything together and then... I don't know what happened. I was hoping you knew that part."
Shane looked away from me and I watched his blue eyes travel around the room.
"I- I don't know!" He practically shouted. He threw his hands in the air in defeat. I guess I was wrong. He actually broke first.
"Well when you find out I'll be at the old electrical building." I turned and walked off without looking back. I continued out of the school and kept walking. I couldn't go home this early but I couldn't stay at school either, and with my history no one ever told me otherwise.
