4 years later...

I'm 15 now. My parents have been training me to be the alpha female, the alpha's mate.  But I don't want to be the mate of the alpha. Even though my brother Jakx has been gone for 4 years, I never stopped training, practicing the teachings he left me with in my free time. Mother and father don't know about it because I train in secret. Mornings were no longer a safe time to train because 4 years ago after I confessed to father that Jakx was training me, Father has been outside every morning keeping an eye on me. Instead now I train at night when everyone's asleep. I got up in the middle of the night when I knew mother and father were asleep. The years weren't kind to us at home either. After sending his son away father was less open to conversation at home. Mother was around when I needed her but even her spirit was broken a little. It wasn't the same without Jakx.

I walked outside as I went into the forest with a bow and a quiver full of arrows. In my isolation I learned to be a skilled huntress. I searched the forest looking for breakfast to bring home. It took me a bit but I finally found deer tracks. Following the tracks led me to a clearing in the woods with a waterfall, or this forest's watering hole for the animals. I climbed a tree to get a bird's eye view as I pulled an arrow from my quiver and loaded my bow, pulling back the bowstring with a gentle touch. My brother's voice echoed in my mind.

Breathe Liyna, you're getting too frustrated, you can't brute force the arrow to go where you want, you must guide it. Pull back the bowstring gently, aim your arrow, take a deep breath and exhale. Focus on your target, take a breath, exhale and release! I watched the arrow strike the deer piercing its side as it fell over. Nice you got it! See? If you keep this up you'll be as good as I am in no time! Jakx laughed as the memory faded as I shed a silent tear.

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and exhaled. I breathed calmly as I guided my arrow aiming at the deer's head. I took another deep breath, and exhaled slowly as I let loose the arrow. It cut through the air as it sailed with a soft whistle towards the deer. I watched the deer drop as the arrow sank into it's skull. I smiled pleased with myself as I went to collect my kill. As I reached the corpse of the deer I pulled my arrow from it's skull and began to drag the kill home.

I was halfway home when I saw red in the sky. I hadn't been gone that long was it sunrise already? As I got closer my heart sank, the light was coming from my home, and smoke was filling the sky. My house was on fire! I began to panic as I dropped my kill, scaled the trees and ran as fast as I could jumping from limb to limb as I ran home. As I got closer I was mortified. My house was in flames. My mother and father were on their knees in the back yard with 7 Lycans standing around them. I wanted to help but when one of the Lycans pulled my fathers head back, my fathers eyes locked with mine. My father gave me a look ill never forget, a look that said RUN. I watched as my father desperately tried to get free of their grasp. I watched them slit my mother's throat right there in the back yard. My father screamed, I screamed through my hands letting out a muffled whisper. An 8th Lycan walked up to my father kneeling beside him.

???: I'm only going to ask this once, submit or die.

My father looked at the Lycan dead in the eyes, and without fear said, "You might kill me here and now. You might have wiped out the tribe. But this tribe will live on, and one day you'll get what's coming to you for breaking the law!"

???: Death it is then. Oh before you die I should tell you, your laws no longer apply. If you haven't noticed your kingdom has fallen, and one day your tribe well be all but forgotten!

My father looked at him, tears and rage in his eyes, "You'll never get away with-" Before my father could finish they slit his throat too. I let out a painful muffled scream as I watched my parents die. I couldn't even see the face of the attackers. I knew I couldn't stay put, so I ran as fast and as silently as I could through the forest, desperately trying to get as far away as possible from my home. My parents were gone, my family was gone... My tribe... Was gone.

As I ran through the forest I jumped to the ground and took off running. I was so far into the forest I didn't know which way I had come from. I had been running for maybe a couple hours before I stopped to catch my breath. That's when I heard a sound from the bushes. I immediately drew an arrow from my quiver and took deadly aim. I waited for what seemed like hours but in fact was mere minutes for the source of the sound to emerge, for death to come, for anything to happen. I was almost ready to let the arrow fly when Jakx emerged from the brush. I dropped my bow and arrow and ran to my brother, tears in my eyes as he held me tight. I was sobbing uncontrollably and who could blame me after what I witnessed.

"Jakx thank god your here! These Lycans came to our home, slaughtered our tribe and killed mother and father! I screamed between tears.

"Liyna I know, I was on my way home after finally being finished with training when I saw the smoke from the kingdom. When I got home everyone was dead, the house was on fire and I found mom and dad. When I didn't find you I knew you had to be in these woods. I figured despite what mom and pop said you would be just as determined as when I left you to be one of the top alphas. It's a good thing too or you might've joined mom and pop in death." Jakx said not letting me go as he held me tight.

"What are we going to do now Jakx? We have no home!" I cried.

"Hey look at me Liyna, right now I need you to be brave, braver than you have ever been. Right now we need to focus on getting somewhere safe. Whoever killed mom and pop obviously wants our tribe out of the picture. For now we need to find shelter, we need to be prepared. Whether you like it or not Liyna, a war is coming." Jakx said with the most seriousness in his voice that I had ever heard.
