I woke up the next morning to my phone vibrating next to my face. Swiping the answer icon, I answered groggily.

"Hello?"

"Come outside."

"I'm sorry, who is this?"

"It's Jenica, ya butt! Now come outside." She hung up and I groaned, rolling to the edge of my bed, them swinging my legs over. I dug my toes into the carpet then stood up, stretching.

I walked into the bathroom, doing my normal morning routine. Washing my face, brushing my teeth, making weird faces in the mirror and then putting on my slippers and walking down the stairs.

Opening the door, i saw Jen sitting on the steps. I kicked her lightly and she looked up at me.

"About time. Why aren't you dressed?" She stood up and brushed off her butt, staring at my pajamas.

"I wasn't aware we were going anywhere, I said shrugging.

"It's Saturday. We go to breakfast at Rita's every Saturday. Ugh, just go get dressed." I let her inside and she waited on the couch while I went back upstairs. I took off my pajama pants and looked down at the scrap of metal attached to my ankle. I feel like a prisoner. I slipped into some sweat pants and put on my UGGS, then threw my BBHS sweater over my head. Fixing my hair into a messy bun, I ran bak downstairs.

"Okay I'm ready", I said out of breath. She stood up and we walked out the door and got into the car.

The car ride was quiet, only the cheesy Christmas music playing filling the silence. Why isn't she talking?

Finally, she spoke, " You know what? I don't think I'm gonna go to Winter Ball."

I looked at her, shocked. "Why?"

"I don't know. I don't have ten dollars to spend on a ticket and I don't feel like it's that important. I'd rather stay home and watch Netflix."

"Hm. Okay." Again, silence. It stayed like this for the rest of the drive. After we arrived at Rita's, we walked in and took our usual seat at the booth in the back corner.

"You okay?" I looked up at her from my cup if coffee. She nodded and looked out the window. I looked out and saw Liam standing about 10 feet away, leaning against a car. I gasped and slammed my hands in the table to get Jen's attention.

"Bullshit. What's wrong?" She looked me dead in the eye, almost scowling.

"He didn't want to go to the dance with me. David I mean. He didn't want to go. So Im staying home."

"Oh, Jen, come on. Don't let a boy bring you down. You have to come, I said, giving her puppy eyes.

She sighed, smirking. "I'll think about it." I took that as a yes.

After breakfast, she drove me home. Waving goodbye, I walked into the house and sat on the phone. Ring. Ring.

"Hello?"

"Hey Newbie." Liam.

"What do you want?!  Why were you outside the diner? Are you stalking me?"

"Of course not, newb. Ive got better things to do. Just making sure you don't slip up. That's all."

"Well I won't. Happy? Now stop watching me. That crap is not okay."

"Its not about what's okay. Its about protecting Demon Hunters."

"Well I don't wanna be a Demon Hunter! Why don't you realize that?!"

"It isn't up to me, newb. Its your calling."

"I don't have time for this bullshit." I hung up, tossing my phone onto the couch.  It's your calling. Yeah right.

By that point, I was determined to find my real parents and digire out what hell they got me into.
