That night, Gromit was fast asleep. He slowly opened his eyes and yawned. He skratched his shoulder and looked to the side. He was in a black void with nothing except his bed, but this time it somehow felt relaxing. "Hello!?" Gromit called out. He was sure that this relaxing feeling would leave him as something would surely come out to jump him again, but it didn't. He looked around and spotted some stairs.
Gromit got out of his bed and walked towards the stairs. "Nothing else felt to do." he thought as he walked up the stairs. It was a long way up and a strong light was shining from the very top. Once Gromit got up, he stood in front of a door. When he opened it, Gromit gasped. It was him when he was a little puppy. The puppy innocently stared at his older self. Gromit didn't know what to say, but the puppy did.
"You look an awful lot like me! Are you me?" asked the little pup. Gromit didn't know what to say, but eventually formed his answer. "Well, I wasn't for a while, I had lost a part of you, and I was left completely lost." responded Gromit. The puppy thought about what he had said. "A part of me.. Left you left? Oh no, have I been a bad friend? I didn't mean to leave you lost without me, I swear!" said the worried pup.
Gromit giggled. "No no, I was really me who left you, I was the bad friend here, I'm sorry for leaving you behind." he whispered. "It's a-ok! We all make mistakes!" said the little puppy and hugged his older self. But right then and there, the pup formed in to a spirit and floated through the door, as it whispered to Gromit "Follow me right this way..".
"I'm coming!" called out Gromit, but when he peaked through the door, the floor was nowhere to be seen. Gromit took a deep breath and stepped back. He shut his eyes and rushed through the door. When Gromit opened his eyes, he was most surprised. He was flying over a beautiful field of roses. "Woahh! I'm free as the wind! Just like a sparrow!" exclaimed Gromit as he continued soaring across the field. All the roses opened as he passed, leaving a beautiful sight.
Gromit's ears were gently flapping in the air, while he carried on deeper in to the field. The roses started to form into stars, flying behind him, like a flock of birds flying towards the sunset. He eventually landed on a big beautiful rose. It was almost as big as him! Gromit giggled. He huged the rose and sighed. It still felt like something was missing. He thought and thought on that rose, but didn't say anything.
Gromit heard someone calling his name. He glanced towards the sound and gasped. It was Wallace! He had the most worm smile on his face as he stood next to the door of light! "Come along, lad. I will get rather lonely without you by my side!" called out Wallace, as he walked inside the door of light. Well, Gromit felt like he was about to weep of joy.
Gromit got up from his rose and stared at the light. "Woah, It's so bright and wonderful! he said. He slowly made his way towards the light. Running wasn't necessary. He suddenly stopped. "What if it disappears again!? he thought. "Gromit, why are you so nervous..!?" he asked himself, not really knowing what answer to expect. "This time, it feels just right. It must be it, I'm sure." Gromit firmly said as he walked into the light.
Meanwhile, Wallace, who had been watching the whole thing, decided that this was it! He finally stopped the simulation. It was late at night. He walked towards Gromit's bright oxygen chamber and opened it. The brave inventor picked up his best friend's fragile body and stared. It was quite a sight. "Everything's going to be alright, lad." he whispered, not knowing if he was really trying to comfort Gromit or well, himself? He slowly started walking upstairs, carrying his best friend. He turned off the light with a bump of his shoulder and glanced back at the dark basement. He stood there, just taking all of that in. "A lesson sure was learned, but let's hope it won't have any long bad lasting effects." Wallace whispered to himself. He walked away from the basement up to Gromit's room. He walked inside and gently laid Gromit back in his bed. He put on his night cap and covered Gromit with his blanket.
Not long after, Wallace wrote a note and left it on the little light table for Gromit to see. Wallace slowly walked out of the room, leaving his best friend to soon discover what awaited him. Hours passed by and eventually Gromit woke up. He looked out of the window, it was already evening. "Geez how long have I been slee- Wait a second.. It's a new day!! I- I can't believe this!!" he exclaimed! He pinched himself to see if he was dreaming. Gromit rushed out of bed running all over his room, wagging his tail in excitement. He eventually sat back down. His eyes rushed around his room, when something caught his eye. He saw a note on the little table next to his bed. "Heey.. What's that?" he said out loud. He grabbed it and started reading. It was from Wallace! He told him to come meet at his favorite bar. Gromit was very joyful, he decided to go get dressed in his black outfit.
About five minutes passed as he got ready. Gromit walked down stairs in style, towards the door. "Goodbye home!" he called out as he shut the door. The air was cold but it was sunny. "What a lovely day!" exclaimed Gromit. He put on his sunniest smile and cheerfully walked down the street to a happy beat. He saw children happily playing. They cheered and laughed when they saw him. Gromit waved to them as he walked by.
Gromit walked down the stair way leading downtown. A few minutes passed and Gromit looked up ahead. The bar was across the street. He slowed down as he approached it. Gromit opened the door and walked inside. He looked all around and saw Wallace who was waving to him. Gromit walked up to Wallace and gave him a sincere hug! "Wallace, I'm pleased to see you!" cheered Gromit. "Many thanks lad, many thanks indeed!" smiled Wallace.
Gromit took a seat and ordered his tea. "Imagine this, Gromit. Tea out of cheese! Oh how has nobody thought of this genius idea!" exclaimed Wallace, pointing his finger up! "Heh, getting right to the point. Well, only an inventor like you could think of something like that. Although I must say, with an idea like that, you've definitely gone crackers this time!" laughed Gromit. "Most definitely! But tell you what, lad. Once we're back home I'll make the best of that idea!" said Wallace, as he stretched out his arms. "Dream big, Wallace! " said Gromit, slurping down on his tea, listening to Wallace's imagination run wild!
The best friends talked and laughed for hours. Eventually, their conversation came to a close as they decided that it was time to head back home. They got up and exchanged goodbyes with the bar. "All's well that ends well, that's what I always say." said Wallace, as they stepped out of the bar. Side by side, the cracking duo walked down the street giggling and laughing in sheer joy. Their silhouettes blending with the beautiful sunset.
