"I feel I was born ages ago. I drag my life after me like a gown with an endless train."
The Seagull ------ by Anton Chekhov

SEO-YUN KIM COULD STILL recall that fateful day she and her parents arrived at Ellis Island in the city she would know as New York. From the overabundance of unfamiliar smells to the new sounds tickling her little ears. It had been sudden as her little feet had nearly sent her racing back aboard the ship had not been for her father's steady grip. "This is our new home," he said gently, with a glassy sheen overtaking his eyes as he peered down at her. Eyes that had seen so many sacrifices just to get where they were now, leaving no hope of turning back.

Seo-yun had been too young to understand, but time helped ease the confusion of that moment as she grew into a young woman. Her new home had not always been kind nor gentle, leaving her to be pushed aside as an outlier alongside many others deemed unmerited. But Seo-yun had developed an armor that she carried wherever she went, shielding her from the harsh obscenities of life. However, even with this obtained armor, the young woman never lost her heart. A heart that ached on the edge of her sleeve whenever the sight of someone in need called to her. Seo-yun's mother had always said that she was blessed with a good heart, and that blessing had been granted to that of her patients as Seo-yun progressed through nursing school and caring for those in need.
