It's a rainy Sunday morning. I'm standing beside Hitch and we're both staring at the 4 twelve year old girls who have just said their last goodbyes to their parents. 3 of them are wiping away the last of the teardrops from their faces. This is always the worst part of counseling, trying to get the new campers to calm down enough to get them settled into the cabin. Everything is on a rush the first day. Get unpacked, go to lunch, and then the opening ceremonies. It doesn't leave a lot of time for being sad, I think they do that on purpose.
"Okay girls! I'm Y/N and this is Hitch! We are going to be your counselors this week! I know it can be scary leaving home for the first time, but I promise you, you are all going to have so much fun this week! And if you need anything you can ask us! We will always be here to help!" I say in my 'counselor voice.'
I do mean it though, I remember what it was like coming here for the first time. It's scary for sure. I want these girls to have as much fun as I used to.
"Pfft. I can't believe I'm surrounded by these babies. Can I stay with people that aren't going to cry like weaklings? Pathetic."
My eyes shoot open wide and Hitch and I share a look of equal confusion.
"Cabin assignments are final. And it's completely normal to be a little sad. There's no need to be cruel." Hitch says without missing a beat. "What's your name?"
"I'm Gabi Braun. I'm the strongest kid in my class back at home in Liberio. I don't need to be surrounded by idiots that are going to bring me down."
Gabi Braun? Liberio? Oh no it's-
"Braun?? As in Reiner Braun?" Hitch finishes my thought.
"Yeah! He's my cousin. I'm going to be as strong as him when I'm older. I can already almost beat him in an arm wrestle, so I don't think it'll be much longer."
Of course Gabi would be Reiners cousin. And of course she's in MY cabin. Thankfully it's only for the week.
"Alright girls, let's go get settled." I state.
We all walk back to the cabins and Hitch and I help get the girls unpack and diffuse any fights over who gets the top bunks. There's not much time left to chat before lunch but we learn that the other 3 girls are Violet, Halle and Mina. We make it to lunch and sit at a large table with Sasha and Mikasa's group. I'm hoping they will all make friends with each other so I can hangout with Sash and Mika this week. I don't really want to be left alone with Hitch more than I have to. I take a seat and introduce the girls to my friends.
"Hey girls! Nice to meet you all! I'm Sasha, and this is Mikasa. We're in cabin 6 so we're neighbors, we will be seeing a lot of each other this week!" Sasha ignores the small eye roll Hitch makes. "Anyways, this is Lily, Bella, Cora and Kaya!"
The girls start to chat amongst themselves, talking about school and the upcoming summer. Well, everyone but Gabi who is just sitting with a slight scowl on her face, picking at her food.
"Make sure you guys eat lots, we have a busy day today! We will be meeting the rest of the counselors and more campers as well." Mikasa suggests.
We sit and eat for a bit. It's a bit awkward with Hitch sitting with us, I feel like we can't really talk about anything with her here.
"Gabi, want to go say hi to Reiner?" Hitch asks the brown haired girl.
Gabis eyes widen and she stands up immediately. "Yes please!"
I watch as the 2 girls walk over to the table where Reiner and Bert's campers are sitting. I turn to look at Sasha and Mikasa.
"Why would she want to say hi to Reiner?" Mikasa asks.
