Chapter 3

The water you had heard ended up being further away than you had first expected. After a long while of searching, you finally reached the small creek. The water was fast-flowing and crystal clear, tempting and inviting you.

Cleaning your hands, you worked swiftly, knowing staying at one place was too dangerous, too risky. Next to you, Carter crouched next to you with a sigh.

''You never told me your name.'' He said, keeping his gaze on the water, despite your attempts to meet it.

''[Y/N].'' You answered softly, giving up and focusing on cleaning off the last bits of blood. Though you still had some doubts, you decided that Carter should at least know your name. As a sort of 'thank you' for the scar now haunting his right cheek.

''Pretty name.'' He answered, his icy-blue eyes still focused on the rippling water, watching a few fish swim downstream.

''Are you supposed to say 'thanks'? It's not like you chose that name or something.'' You blurt out suddenly. ''Why should you say 'thank you' for something that you didn't even do?'' Finally, Carter looked up, his expression confused but amazed.

"What? How did you just think of that out of nowhere?" He said, letting out a breathy chuckle. You shrugged, not really knowing an answer.

The both of you continued in silence, yet it wasn't uncomfortable. It made you think you could forgive the male after all, despite his earlier actions. Maybe the two of you could be friends, more even.

For a second, you could forget the messed up place you were in, instead letting your thoughts wonder to a better world. A world where you didn't have to be on edge all the time. A world where trust and honesty was a thing. A world where you could lay down at night, worrying about nothing, even better; a world where you could get a full night's sleep. A world where every moment couldn't be your last. It gave you hope, hope for a better time. Maybe you'd make it out after all.

"Do you- do you ever wish you weren't in this place?" You mumbled, your voice quiet, yet he heard you.

"All the time." Carter assured you, voice not louder than a whisper, though it sounded loud and clear in your ears.

~~~
With a yawn, your eyelids flutter open, the light shining brightly into your [e/c] eyes. For a second, you got confused, as you did not remember falling asleep at all. You shot up, taking in your surroundings, the memories coming back like bees to their hive.
After you and Carter had finished at the creek, the both of you had returned into the woods opposite from the waterway. Despite your earlier doubts, you now appreciated his presence, even though he could be annoying. You had talked for a while, but eventually you must've fallen asleep, as you couldn't remember the rest.
Your eyes searched around until they landed on your companion, whom was sitting wide awake, his back against the tree and mindlessly drawing in the sand. He seemed to be lost in thought, to which you decided to disturb him, for no specific reason really.
''Morning, Carter.'' You said, standing up whilst stretching your limps, hearing the bones crack as the stiffness disappeared.
"Holy- you gave me a heart attack, [Y/N]." He said as he snapped around, glaring at you.
"I know." You answered, grinning. He gave you the finger, turning around and refocusing his eyes on whatever he had been looking at earlier. Settling down beside him, you couldn't help but wonder what was going on in his mind, so you slightly shoved his shoulder.
"What's on your mind?"
Carter hummed, hesitating with his answer. "A lot." He finally said, avoiding your questioning gaze.
"Like what?" You asked, curious.
"When we get food again, or water. A full night's sleep, even." He summed up. "What it would be like if we weren't in this fucked up place."
You hummed in agreement, as you recognised this in yourself as well. Still, there seemed to be something he was holding back, as his brows were furrowed, and a faint tint of pink coloured his cheeks. It was kinda cute, in your opinion.
Wait no, I don't like him like that! Cute, as in adorable, like you'd call a bunny cute, your mind protested, but your heart told you otherwise.
You bumped your shoulder against his, and when he turned to look at you, you said; "hey, we'll make it out. Somehow." He smiled sadly, and you returned it.
Perched next to each other, the two of you sat silently beside each other, enjoying each other's presence.
Of course, that had to be ruined.
[CLIFFHANGERRR.
At least it didn't take me like 5 months to update this time.
It's a shorter chapter than usual, but it's really just a filler one. I wanted to have what comes next its own chapter.
Anyway, eat, drink, know you're loved!
I appreciate you reading this! Don't be shy and spill your opinions in the comments as well!
