Ironically, the door happened to knock right after Cathleen said that. My heart rate began to pick up and I stood in place.
"Aren't you gonna get the door?" Cathleen looked at me as if I was an idiot.
"Can't you?" I snapped.
"It's your house, Rose." She squinted her eyes.
"I know you're home, Rose." Don said irritatingly as he banged on the door.
I smoothed out my hair and made my way to the door, taking a deep breath before opening. When the door opened I gasped. Don was missing a tooth on the top right of his mouth, both of his eyes were swollen and dark as night.
He gave the same charming smile as he would on a normal day although I wouldn't consider it so charming anymore.
"Hey, Rose." He continued to smile.
I have a half smile but couldn't help but laugh. I busted out laughing harder than I'd laughed at anything in my life.
Don's face shifted from 'charming' to angry.
"Oh, you think this is funny?" He grabbed my wrist and pulled me outside closing the door behind me.
"Don, let go, that hurts." I tried pulling away but he wouldn't budge.
"I'll have you know something, whore. You think I didn't notice you run off with that punk last night?" He grabbed tighter.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about." I winced in pain at my wrist that was being twisted.
"I'm not stupid, and I will not be made a fool. Got that?"
Tears came in my eyes from the pain and I nodded in reply.
"Good. See you later, Rose." He smirked before walking to his car.
Once he pulled away I went back inside. "What's wrong?" Cathleen said worriedly. I hid my wrist behind my back.
"Oh nothing, just pains me that somebody would hurt Don like that." I held back most of the tears.
"It's awful, I know, but he'll get better." Cathleen smiled sympathetically.
That's what I worry about most.
