I feel a warm glow on my face, something bright. I open my eyes and it's morning. Very early morning. I wipe my eyes and sit up looking at the pink sunset just setting over the horizon. I crawl back inside and walk over to where Scarlett left my backpack. I pull out pills and my water bottle and take a sip with the pills sliding slowly down my throat. I pour a little in my hand and wipe my face. I want a hot, soapy, good shower.
I put my water bottle away and grab a book to read then I head downstairs. Nobody seems to be awake yet. I go to where our stuff is, and grab a knife, shoving it in my back pocket. I go outside and sit on the porch's steps. I take a deep breath. Today is very warm, with a small breeze.
I close my eyes and listen to the sound of nothing, just my own breathing.
"What are you doing?" A voice behind me.
I jump and turn around to see Harvey leaning on the doorframe. "Jesus, what's with everyone scaring me?"
He takes a seat beside me and stretches. "It's super early, just wondering why you're out here."
"What time is it?" I ask.
"Six thirty." He yawns.
"Guess my brain won't turn off." I look back at the trees.
"Yeah, I think I got maybe two hours of sleep all together."
"I slept a while, I just never get up this early."
"Okay well, i'm going to try and get more sleep before we have to be awake. Please be careful out here okay?"
"Okay, I'll be fine."
He walks back inside and heads to his room.
I open my book and lean against the railing.
5 chapters later, I hear someone coming down the stairs. I show no attention as my book gets to a thrilling scene.
Someone sits next to me. I know it's him.
"Can't you see I'm busy?" I say without taking my eyes off the page.
I saw Silas smirk from the corner of my eye. "I didn't say anything."
"You're distracting me, and this is a good part." I still don't look at him.
He goes silent and stands up abruptly.
I look up at him and he's looking straight out at the gated fence around the house. I squint my eyes to see what he's looking at. I spot a group of zombies swaying outside the fences, not noticing us, but they are heading our way.
I stand slowly, Silas grips my hand and we slowly walk inside and lock the door.
"Go wake up Scarlett and Riley. Get Emma, but don't scare her." He says silently and runs to Harveys room on the main floor. I quite literally sprint up the steps as fast and silent as I can, and open the door to their room.
They're both asleep, Scarlett has her arm draped over Riley's stomach, Riley on her side facing the wall.
If it weren't for the zombies outside, I'd tease Scarlett for spooning Riley. I shake Scarlett and Riley. "Get up, there's zombies outside."
"Mmmm, no." Scarlett grumbles, still asleep.
Riley sits up and rubs her eyes. "If you're joking, I'll drown you." Riley throws Scarletts arm off her and stands up, smacking Scarlett awake.
"What the hell? I'm sleeping you morons!" She opens her red eyes.
I've almost given up on my sleep deprived best friend. "There's zombies outside moron."
