One year after Chase had joined...
Ben was working on a new piece of technology for Ryder, while the young man was playing with Chase. They had done a few rescues, such as helping out the mayor when her pet chicken got stranded up too high, and helping direct traffic. Mayor Goodway had been elected, and she had fully delivered on her promise, but by then it was too late. All of the firefighters and police had either quit, been injured, or died in their duty.
This piece of technology was an upgrade to the pup tags and Ryder's tablet. It would allow Ryder to communicate with the pups over long distances. Today, it was storming outside. A rather nasty bolt of lightning struck outside, and the loud rumbling thunder reverberated throughout Adventure Bay.
Suddenly, they got a call on the tablet. It was from Farmer Yumi. "Ryder, Ben, a bolt of lightning struck my farmhouse and it caught on fire! The blaze is too strong for the rain to extinguish! My animals aren't inside, but still!" Farmer Yumi exclaimed worriedly.
Chase heard that and he barked worriedly. "Oh no!" Chase cried out.
Ryder nodded his head. "Got it, Farmer Yumi. We'll be there as soon as we can!" Ryder promised. The two young boys slid down the pole, while Chase went down the slide and got in his vehicle. Ben got on his motorcycle and Ryder on his ATV. "Paw Patrol is on a roll!" Ryder yelled as they drove off to Farmer Yumi's.
As they got to the farm, Ben could make out the shape of a pup with a bucket in his mouth, trying to douse the flames with the rainwater the bucket was collecting. Unfortunately, he slipped in the mud, yelping, and the bucket went flying out of his mouth and dumped its contents on his head. "Ow!" The pup whined, and Ben got off of his motorcycle.
"Chase, you and I will make sure that the pup is okay and that nobody's still inside the barn! Ben, go check on Farmer Yumi!" Ryder ordered.
Ben nodded his head in affirmation and ran off, being careful not to trip. Ben saw Farmer Yumi standing a considerable distance away from the blazing farmhouse, her animals huddled around her. "Oh, peach fuzz. Ben, I'm real sorry that you and Ryder came all the way up here to help me with the farm. Truth is, I don't think we can save it. I tried the hose and the buckets of water-- it just kept burning. I got everyone out of the farmhouse, at least." Farmer Yumi sadly said.
She started crying and Ben gave her a hug to comfort her.
Meanwhile, on Ryder's end of things...
Ryder peered closely into the blazing barn and shook his head. There wasn't a single animal inside. Chase was helping the pup get the bucket off of his head, pulling so tight on the bucket handle that he went flying and crashed into a nearby tree. Both pups laughed when they saw each other and their eyes spinning. Ryder smiled too, finding solace in the fact that at least they had helped this brave pup. A bolt of lightning struck the farmhouse again and it began to fall apart. "Chase, come on!" Ryder urgently called out, and the German shepherd barked as he followed Ryder to safety.
The pup they had helped with the bucket, a Dalmatian, ran behind them. "WAIT FOR MEEE!" The Dalmatian yelled as he tried to keep up with them, before slipping on a rock and tumbling into Chase.
Chase's tail started wagging as he was muzzle to muzzle with the new pup, and the two young dogs giggled once more. After getting off of Chase, the Dalmatian jumped up and down. "Hi! I'm Marshall! I saw that fire, and I knew it was bad, so I tried to put it out! How did I do?" Marshall asked. Then, the white and black spotted canine saw the wrecked shackles of the barn. His head drooped and he whimpered, covering his eyes with his paws. "I didn't help at all... my clumsiness got in the way again." Marshall whined.
Ben and Farmer Yumi walked over, with Farmer Yumi looking a bit more happy. "Oh, pup, I saw you trying to use the water bucket like an old style firefighter. It was a noble effort. You're awfully brave to try and save my barn like that. You want to be a firefighter when you grow up?" Farmer Yumi greeted the pup, giving him some head pats.
Marshall opened his eyes and looked up at Farmer Yumi. "My mom and dad were fire dogs. They passed away some time ago. I live in the old fire station now. At least, I did, before a mean bulldog kicked me out." Marshall sighed.
Ben stroked his chin thoughtfully and glanced at Ryder, who nodded and gave him a thumbs up. Chase jumped and pawed at Ben's knees. "We can't just leave Marshall alone! He doesn't deserve it!" Chase begged Ben.
Ben smiled as he scratched Chase underneath his chin. "Don't worry, Chase. You won't have to say goodbye to Marshall. I think the two of you are going to become real close over the next few years." Ben promised as he walked over to the Dalmatian. The teenage boy bent down on his knees and extended a hand for Marshall to shake with his paw. "Ryder, Chase, and I saw what you did. You're one courageous canine, Marshall." Ben assured him.
Marshall yipped and perked up his head at the compliment. "You really think so? Even though I tripped and got the water bucket stuck on my head? Or slipped up and accidentally landed on your dog?" Marshall exclaimed.
Ben realized Marshall was no older than one and a half years old. Ben threw back his head and laughed. "Of course I think so! You said you were a fire pup, that means firefighting is in your blood... and I can see that you have a lot of heart for a dog your age. Which is why I have an offer for you." Ben told him.
Marshall started wagging his tail and his eyes grew giant as he anxiously awaited what Ben had to say. "We're putting together a team of canines to help rescue others. And since you're a fire pup... we want you. You'll live with me, Ryder, and Chase at the lookout. I'll admit that it will be tough at times, since you're gonna have to learn how to use the gear we give you, and you might get hurt during a rescue. But you'll have a home, a family, and a purpose. It's up to you, Marshall." Ben explained.
The Dalmatian leapt up in the air. "YES YES YES YES YES! I'm fired up for this! Thank you so much! I promise you won't regret it!" Marshall barked happily.
Ben grinned as he wrapped a dog tag with a fire symbol on it. "Then I'm proud to christen you... Paw Patrol Red." Ben earnestly said.
