DRIP
The droplets of mist are dripping down the window sill. The clouds forming a blanket signaled the onset of heavy rain. The normally dark night looks more like a calm before a storm at the moment. Amidst all these, a small figure is sleeping on the bed, completely enveloped in the safety covers of her blanket, enjoying her beautiful dream through the rainy night. The cold breeze trying to touch her body is blocked by the cute little unicorns on her thick blanket.
CREAKKK
The slight ajar of the door frame makes a creaking sound. The hallway lamp casts the silhouette of two people, a man and a woman, standing outside the door peaking at the small figure lying on the bed through the gap.
"Look at our angel Atty, so innocent. I don't want to leave her. Can't we take her with us. Let's go somewhere, somewhere far away, so far that no one can find us. Let's try it again. we succeeded once. why not try it again.", said the woman to Atticus, the man beside her.
"we can't ivy, they have already traced us. You already know how difficult it was to distract them before. now they have grown more powerful and resources have also grown drastically. we can only stall them for the time being. Moving to another place and living a peaceful life is all I want but we both know that its not possible. Now keeping her hidden and safe is my priority. We don't have any other options left."
His shoulders slouched with tears brimming his eyes. seeing the once strong man now completely defeated made ivy's heart ache.
They both went inside the room, their love towards the child flowing through their salty droplets of emotions, kissed the small girl on her forehead and slowly close the door. Their eyes red and hands trembling as they supported each other down the narrow staircase.
They went towards the living room where a young couple were seated on the couch. The women was crying, her one hand holding the napkin and the other placed softly on her bulging pregnant belly. The husband was consoling her, saying words of comfort near her ears while rubbing her back. He was trying to control his emotions, his heart aching for Atticus, Ivy and his own pregnant wife. Her red rimmed eyes and her sniffling is breaking his heart into pieces.
Hearing the sound of the steps creaking, they both turned towards the staircase.
"Atticus you know that you don't have to do this right. we could find some other way. we could go to the police and ask for their help."
"Evan this is how it should be. You don't know how powerful they are and about informing police, even before they reach here, we would be dead. Now our only wish is to safeguard nix from them. I trust you to do what has to be done. You are like a son to me and I always wished to see your children and play with them just I like did with you but I guess god had other plans." Saying this he hands over a letter to Evan.
"I hope you will keep the promise we made young man."
"I promise"
"Audrey you're gonna be the best mother so don't ever doubt yourself and Evan my child please take care." ,saying this Ivy hugged Audrey .
Listening to their words and knowing that this would their last moment together, the couples had tears in their eyes.
"we should leave now. I guess this is a goodbye. Please tell nix that we love her"
"we sure will tell her but is there any chance that we could convince you to drop out of this suicide mission"
"NO" said the older couples firmly.
"please don't do this" cried Audrey.
"we don't have any other options and we need to leave right now. Its time. Every ticking second delayed is reducing your chance of survival"
"At least you could tell us who is after you" asked Evan.
"I wish I could but it would put your life in danger. you have a bright future ahead. I never wanted to involve any of you in this but I don't know where to keep nix safe for the time being. I have already risked your lives by being here so I don't wish to put more problems in your life. Remember don't try to find anything and don't get yourself involved in this problem cuz some secrets are better unknown"
After saying this, Atticus and Ivy left their house.
That was the last time Evan and Audrey saw the older couple. The next day all they received was the news of their demise.
