After the wedding, I didn't hear from Cameron for a couple of months but I found myself thinking of him at the most random of times. When he finally called, he apologized for the wait and asked if we could meet for coffee. Our coffee date turned into a weekly thing and soon enough, we had been dating for a few months.
Cameron made me happy, I never had to think too far ahead with him. We always took things on a weekly basis and I liked that. I didn't want to complicate things and have any expectations. I'd told him that when we first started seeing each other and he'd agreed with me. For now, this was a no-strings-attached, but exclusive relationship. With Cam, everything was simple – I liked him, he liked me, we got along well. I was finally in a better place after the wedding and upon hearing the news that Amit was about to have a baby, I was elated. He'd invited Cam and I over to Anita's baby shower and the two of us had gone together and had a wonderful time.
One week, instead of the usual coffee date, Cam told me to get dolled up and said he would pick me up at my house. I had gone shopping earlier that week after he told me and I bought a new dress to wear that night. I was feeling excited, but also a little nervous. I stared at myself in the mirror – I was dressed in a sage green floral wrap dress that hugged my body.
I tugged at the dress, it felt tighter now than it had in the store. I had taken the time to do my hair in beach waves. Usually, I didn't get the chance to play dress-up since Cam and I always went on casual dates. Who was this woman staring back at me in the mirror? She didn't look like the old me, but she was still me. I smiled and the woman in the mirror smiled too.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and I jumped. I took a deep breath and went to answer the door. Cam was standing on my porch holding a bouquet of roses and wearing a black suit with the top buttons of his white dress shirt unbuttoned. He looked handsome, as always.
"Wow." He looked at me, his mouth slightly ajar.
I smiled at him coyly, "You did say to look nice."
He gave me his crinkly-eyed smile and handed me the roses as he kissed me gently.
"You look beautiful. These are for you."
I took them from him. "Thank you! Come on in, I'll just put these in a vase." I let him inside while I headed for the kitchen to find a vase and fill it with water. I placed the roses in the middle of my counter where I would see them in the morning. It was sweet of him.
"Ready?" He asked once I was finished, and I nodded. Just then, his phone rang and he checked the ID.
"I have to take this," he said apologetically. He answered the phone, "Mitchell."
He began talking to someone else on the line and it sounded urgent. I got the feeling that our night was about to get cut short. He finished with the call and when he turned to me, there was an apologetic look on his face that said we'd have to reschedule.
Except tonight was my last night in town as I was going away for a post-doc abroad this summer. I had hoped for this evening to be special because we wouldn't be able to see each other in person for a few months.
"I'm sorry," he apologized for the millionth time as he headed to his car.
I smiled at him, "It's okay. Really. I'll call you once I land."
He smiled back at me and waved as he got into his car. I head back into the house and closed the front door. I was about to head for the kitchen to see what I had in the fridge to eat when I heard a knock on the door.
I opened the door and without saying anything, Cam pressed his lips to mine and held me close to him. Something was different in the way he held me, more urgent. It was the first time he'd ever held me like that and I melted into his arms easily. He pulled back and braced his forehead to mine and whispered, "I'm going to miss you."
