And then one day, there was a brilliant flash and Sam and I were back in the SGC.
Part of me had hoped Cam would be on the base, waiting for me. But he was nowhere in sight. General Landry informed me he was out on a mission. After the debrief, they allowed Sam and I to go home.
Before we parted, I turned to Sam. "I'll miss our girls nights."
"Me too," she said, smiling. "But I'm glad to be back. And anyways, we'll still have our girls nights!"
We hugged before leaving and I was comforted that at least she still wanted to see me. When I reached home, it seemed quieter and lonelier than usual. I went to bed without eating and woke up early the next morning before the sun rose.
I lay in bed staring at the ceiling as long as I could, then got ready for the day. Since Sam and I had been gone for over two weeks, everything in my fridge had expired and I needed to run errands. As I got dressed, I glanced at the clothes I had worn yesterday sitting on my chair and noticed something shiny sticking out of my jeans pocket.
Curious, I fished whatever it was out of my pocket and smiled when I realized what it was. His dog-tags hung from my hand. Cameron must have slipped it into my pocket some time during the day. Somehow he had known just what I needed. I slipped them over my head and under my shirt.
Just as I was grabbing my purse, I heard the doorbell ring. "Just a second!"
I opened the door to see who it was and blinked in shock when I saw Cam standing in front of me wearing a worried expression on his face.
"Cam?"
Immediately, he pulled me into a hug and I stood in place. I caught a whiff of his peppermint beard oil as he held me tightly. Instinctively, I reached around him and held him to me. This was what it was supposed to feel like. Him and me together.
He pulled away too soon and held onto my shoulders. "Are you okay?" He asked.
"I'm okay," I said, nodding.
"I got back last night and General Landry mentioned what had happened. I wanted to check on you then, but I called Sam and she suggested I wait until this morning." He sounded sheepish.
"Thank you for checking in on me, but I'm okay, really."
He scratched the back of his head and nodded. "Good, that's good." There was a silence between us and I took a deep breath. It was now or never.
"Cam?"
"Yeah?"
"I was going to run some errands and I'd love the company if you want to tag along?" Chicken.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah," I said softly.
He grinned and said, "Then I'm in! I can drive." He turned and started walking to his car.
"Cam?"
He turned around.
"I love you. And I met this other Cameron when I was gone and he was you but he wasn't you and it's a long story, but I love you. And I want to be with you. I miss you. I think I'd miss you even if we hadn't met." I rushed through the first part and ended up mumbling the last bit, so I wasn't sure if he even heard me.
I clutched the dog-tags around my neck, waiting for Cam to say something.
"I love you too," he said softly. My heart sang. He still loved me.
"Don't say we can't be together. Please. It hurts too much to be away from you. We can't help if something happens to us, that's just the nature of your job. I'd rather be with you through it all."
"Me too. I missed you, Diya." He held my face in his hands and wiped away a tear I hadn't even realized was there.
"I love you." His eyes were a stunning green and his smile lines were so familiarly handsome. He kissed me gently and I molded right into him.
I wasn't letting go this time and neither was he.
