Chapter 1 || Unexpected guest

(A/N: the writing is kinda basic🧍, some things might not make sense cuz I write at 4:00am and my brain just stops working after 2:00am)

The key ring hooked around his slender finger, letting the metal dangle and clink together while Alhaitham walked down the quiet streets of Sumeru. Him being Acting Grand Sage means that it's harder to finish his work early then his job as the scribe, which meant that every night he comes home when the moon is out. He noticed from afar, the warm yellow light from inside his home was lit, meaning that Kaveh actually had his keys this time and was already home. 'I really hope he doesn't stay up all night again...' he thought

Turing the door handle, letting himself inside, he saw Kaveh in the kitchen preparing two glasses of wine. "There you are, oh and I actually have someone over right now, you can go say hi or save me the trouble and go straight to bed"

"Why didn't you discuss this with me earlier? And I thought you were keeping you're life as a roommate a secret" Alhaitham took off his shoes and rested them on the rack, then walked over to the kitchen counter to put his house keys in the bowl.

"He...doesn't know, and why do you care? You bring the traveler here all the time and you don't hear me complaining" - Kaveh

"So your too coward to say that you live with someone else, so you decided to lie and say that my house is yours?" - Alhaitham

"Hey! Remember I pay half of the rent! And this house was originally in my name!" - Kaveh

"Heh, keep yelling and see if your friend will hear you" They both then heard another pair of shoes walking closer from down the hall "Kaveh are you okay?" The person asked, Kaveh sighed "Yes yes I'm fine. M/n, this is Alhaitham...he's just here to pick up some things" Kaveh introduced while handing his friend the glass of wine. "Ah, you're roommate." M/n casually sipped on the grape wine as Kaveh's face contorted to an expression of horror

"Acting grand sage" M/n extended a hand to shake Alhaitham's, 'how did he figure it out that quickly?Kaveh really needs to shut his mouth'

The grey haired observed M/n's strong posture and respectable manner, his eyes seemed very attentive and sharp. While shaking M/n's hand he asked "You work for the Akademiya?"

"Yes, I am a Mahamatra in training"

This peaked Alhaitham's interest "So you must have heard about the ground breaking news about The Scarlet King that happened this morning"

"Yes, though I wish I was there to have seen the findings myself"

"Wait what? What findings? And how did you know that I live with him!?" Kaveh chimed in, looking at the two with shock and confusion. M/n smiled and said

"Your room is a mess but the rest of the house is spotless, not to mention the books that contain various subjects that you aren't interested in"

"So THATS why you were asking me things about the subconscious! Well, I guess observation comes with being a Matra. But what are these artifacts you're talking about?"

"Really? What have you been doing all day?" M/n seemed to have taken the words out of the sages mouth, but rephrased it in a much nicer tone. "Ugh...I've been working with a client all day, I didn't have time to meet with anyone else"

"But you still had the time to run to the bar to meet your friend" - Alhaitham

"Actually, I spotted him walking down the street and invited him over" Kaveh sent a forced smile at Alhaitham that basically said 'fuck u ur wrong'

"Speaking of your client, I happen to know her, she's a family friend and I think I might be able to pinpoint her likes and dislikes"

"Really!? You'd do that?! Wait- no, this is my job. I should be the one doing that. No need to help me"

"No seriously, i insist, I'm sure she'll be happy to see me as well, please let me help"

Kaveh sighed "oh alright"

"I'll be going to bed now, goodnight" Alhaitham saw no point in continuing conversation, so he left with tiredness in thought. Quickly undressing and got ready for bed, he laid down and closed his eyes, trying to clear his mind of unnecessary thoughts that might keep him up, but that turned to be unsuccessful when a thought was planted in his brain that made him open his eyes, starting at the ceiling.

'How was M/n unaware of Kaveh's day but knows his client?'

"What have you been doing all day?"
"Speaking of your client, I happen to know her"

Even while having breakfast this thought didn't leave my brain. I suppose Kaveh's client would have told M/n, but that would mean that M/n would have known what Kaveh was doing, and Kaveh did not speak about his client to M/n until I came home. Though I was puzzled by this thought. I didn't see a reason too look into it and proceed to pack up and get to work.

Not even a minute had passed when I stepped foot on campus, when chaos had spread across the entire Akademiya, students were running around, people were whispering amongst themselves and there peers, and tensions were high. A student immediately spotted me and called me "Acting Grand Sage Alhaitham!" She ran over to which I replied "what's going on here?"

"You haven't heard?! The new King Deshret findings have been stolen!"
