It was so obvious that even Naruto noticed it.

Granted, it wasn't even close to as bad as when Sasuke walked over - because Naruto was with him. It was still blatantly obvious.

The distrust was written all across the villagers' faces. Though he was annoyed with the looks, he had to admit - they had every right to be worried. After all (despite no one knowing) Sasuke was planning something morally questionable. He knew it and that was enough. Regardless, he carried on his constant pace. He didn't care.

He had one specific objective in his mind - and quite frankly . . . he didn't care one bit about what he had to do to acquire it. His goals were set and his moral compass was broken.

He didn't care.

Murder?

Unfortunate, but if it came down to it he understood his priorities.

Not yet, Sasuke thought. He couldn't afford to do anything out of line right now. Not with everyone so weary about him. If people mysteriously went missing so close to his sudden 'change of heart' there would be almost no doubt who the villagers would blame first.

Him.

Duh.

Who else would it be? Because no matter how much he thought it, the people of Konoha weren't stupid. Naruto wasn't stupid. Kakashi wasn't stupid. Tsunade wasn't stupid.

"Sasuke? Sasuke, are you listening to me?"

The Uchiha silently cursed at himself. Shit.

He forgot about Naruto. How did he manage that? The blonde was literally yelling right in his face. Man! What a pain! Sasuke tried to recall what Shikamaru always used to say. Oh yeah.

What a drag.

That summed up the situation very well.

"Naruto, what are you on about?"

As soon as the words came out, the Uchiha bit his tongue. The words were laced with venom and certainly weren't intended to come out in such a way. He still needed Naruto on his side.

Nothing would work if he broke that bond yet.

To Sasuke's relief, Naruto didn't seem at all put back by his best friend's tone. In fact, it appeared to have the opposite effect. The bright boy appeared ecstatic over Sasuke's indifference. Only then did it click for Sasuke. Naruto was happy to have Sasuke indifferent.

It meant things were going back to normal.

In his own twisted way, Sasuke felt bad for the Uzumaki. It wasn't his fault he was so trusting. He just believed that everyone had some good in them. A lingering shadow of something better. Something worthwhile saving.

Only thing was, what do you do when someone wasn't worth saving?

What do you do when they have no good left in them?

Interestingly enough, Sasuke had an easy going conversation with Naruto all the way to their destination. What had originally stemmed from a short walk around Konoha inevitably turned into a sprint for Ichiraku.

Of course it did!

That damn Naruto was always shoving his face with ramen.

Not that Sasuke blamed him. Ichiraku ramen was certainly the best ramen in the world. No questions about it. Oftentimes while away from Konoha and training under Orochimaru, Sasuke found himself thinking about you - that was no surprise. The slight shock was that he occasionally thought about Ichiraku. Would he take you there for a first date?
