Walking down the halls at this time of the evening was eerie. The sun was setting and the dark hues of the sky were peeking through the cracks in the blinds. As I got to Silas' bedroom door, a bad feeling developed in my stomach. It almost made me want to run away but I knew I couldn't.
I gently knocked on the door awaiting a response. Nothing. I knocked again, this time letting him know it was me.
"Hey Silas, are you in there? It's Abby!" I called.
The lock on the door unlatched and I slowly walked in and shut the door behind me. Silas was standing in silence gazing out of the window. I went and stood next to him and joined him in staring out of the window.
His bedroom had the nicer view. You could see the whole of the capital and the sunset made it even more magnificent.
I could hear small sniffles beside me - he was crying. He started to sob harder and I wrapped my arms around him and let him cry.
After Silas had calmed down, we sat on the edge of his bed in silence. I felt a mix of emotions whirling inside of me. I was concerned - I had never seen Silas cry before so something must've happened. I was confused - he was completely fine earlier. I was frustrated - nobody was telling me what was happening. And finally I was sad - seeing him cry brought back memories of my family and I was sad my friend was feeling this way.
In this moment my curiosity got the best of me.
"What happened? Why are you so upset?" I questioned.
He looked at me for the first time tonight and I could see the fire in his eyes. He got up from the bed and ran a hand through his hair, heading towards the window. I got up to follow him but his words made me freeze into place.
"My family. They're dead. All of them. President Snow, he-he killed them," he spoke his voice cracking.
I was stunned. My mouth opened and closed, struggling to get any words out. Why would he do that? Why kill his family?
I walked over to him and put my hand on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry," I stammered not really sure of what to say.
It was silent for a minute and I was getting more worried. All of a sudden the silence was broken.
"I'm going to kill him," he stated with determination in his voice.
"I-I think you should get some rest," I said to him calmly.
I could see the anger rising in him and I wanted him to calm down, although I know that'll be hard because of what happened.
"What you think what he did to my family was right? Huh?" He started coming closer towards me.
"You think that this, this is all okay huh? You think you're just some perfect little 13 year old girl and everyone adores you! We'll take a reality check, it's only a matter of time before your dead!" He shouted, his voice getting louder with each word.
At this point I was backed against the wall, Silas towering over me with a murderous look on his face. Tears pricked at the corner of my eyes and my breathing was ragged.
The bedroom door was thrown open by Chaff.
"Silas!" He shouted, getting his attention.
Silas took a step back from me and I wasted no time running out of the room. What just happened?
The door slammed closed behind me and I waited there for a moment. I could hear Chaff scolding Silas and I took that as my queue to go to my room.
