I laid in my bed as night fell and the world stilled. I closed my eyes focusing on the crickets chirping as they called for their mates. The wind blew through the trees rocking the motorhome as an owl hooted in the distance. The soft snores of my parents sleeping soundly in the next room reached me and I knew they would not wake again until the morning. My stomach churned as I realized Bo was somewhere outside of my home, protecting me. The thought bothered me more than I wanted to admit. He shouldn't have to put himself in danger for me.
Slowly, I opened my eyes knowing that sleep would not come for me while my mind was speeding through everything that had happened over the last day. Rising from my bed, I tiptoed to the window, squinting as I peered out into the darkness. Light surrounded our motorhome but beyond that was the field, its floor covered in a rolling fog so thick it seemed as if a layer of storm clouds had fallen to earth. My eyes moved as a movement in the center of the light caught my attention. There Bo stood, staring up at the moon with his hands shoved in the pockets of his jeans. As if he sensed my gaze upon him, he turned and met my eyes. He gave me a smile that was so sad that it created a pain that radiated through my chest to settle in my heart.
I swallowed as I stared into his eyes trying to push away the gripping agony in my chest realizing that I wasn't feeling my own pain...It was his pain. Closing my eyes to block the emotions moving through me, I wondered how he could affect me so much when I had just met him. I opened my eyes and stepped away from the window, moving to the door opening it without hesitation before stepping out into the cool night air.
He raised his brow as he watched me walking toward him. "You shouldn't be out here," he said, his lips lifting in a crooked grin. "We're not supposed to be alone, remember? It's the rules."
"Are you going to make me go back inside?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest as he shook his head.
"No," he said, tilting his head to beckon me to follow him before moving toward a picnic table and sitting down on its top before his gaze moved slowly over me, his eyes darkening in a way that made my stomach clench. I glanced down realizing I was still wearing my pajama shorts and a t-shirt. "I'm not going to make you go in. I like the view too much."
"You're naughty," I said, laughing and he placed his hand over his chest feigning innocence.
"Me?" He asked and then, his eyes darkened with that sadness I had seen in them earlier. "No...I'm the quiet, boring one... At least that's what my family believes."
I frowned as I remembered how quiet he had been in Fiona and Ion's presence. I wondered if the Bo I had met was the one they didn't know well. Then, I shook my head. "I don't think you're boring...Or quiet," I said, raising my brows.
"That's because you don't know me well," he said glancing up at the sky. My gaze moved upward, and I found the full moon peeking out from the inky black clouds. I turned from it to study Bo. Again, his beauty took my breath away and I wondered if that was why I was so affected by him but I knew as I thought it that it wasn't. He was funny, but he had a sadness about him that tugged at my heart. He was quiet and serious for his family but laid back and teasing with me. He was an enigma I wanted to figure out.
"Do I still pass inspection?" He asked, his lips twitching, and I blushed because I had been caught ogling him...again.
"You'll still do," I said, raising my chin and his lips twitched again before becoming a grin.
"You'll be happy to know you passed mine the moment you stepped out of the trailer," he said softly but that grin was still plastered across his face. "I really like those shorts."
