Claire's body seemed as if it were breaking apart to be put together again to become the beast that always lurked beneath her skin. Her face elongated as did her teeth. Her hands became claws and her body, once smooth erupted with thick black fur. The crash of a lamp, caused me to close my eyes in fear of my friend but the sound of the lock made me open my eyes wide because the threat beyond the door was much more dangerous. My gaze moved to Claire, but her clothes were gone, and she stood in the middle of the room more wolf than human. Standing on her feet she rose above me, her teeth exposed in a terrifying grin that made me push my back into the wall even further.
The lock of the door clicked and then, swung open causing Claire's eyes to move from me to the one who entered. A male gasp sounded though I could not see who it belonged to as Claire lunged. The scent of blood coated the room as shouts of alarm echoed through the house.
"She's transitioned," I heard Mary's terrified voice say as I moved out of the room, stepping over the body of a man I did not know. I stopped realizing the handle of a gun poked from his waistband. I knelt and picked it up, the scent of silver and wolf's bane burning my nose.
"Get outside!" Eva's voice screamed through the house, "Corral her...Kill her if you have to!"
I narrowed my eyes at the command. I wouldn't allow anyone to harm Claire. I gripped the gun following her out of the house and into the street.
One of the Grey wolves moved toward her. His eyes already glowing with his wolf. I raised the gun, aiming it at his chest while pulling back the hammer and firing. He stopped in his tracks, lowering his head to stare at the hole spurting blood from his chest before falling at Claire's feet as the scent of silver and wolf's bane surrounded me.
Another moved toward her and I aimed again, thankful that my father had taught me to shoot a gun as I pulled back the trigger and fired again. The shots echoed through the air as I shot a third and fourth Grey wolf. I swallowed, terrified with each shot afraid I would run out of bullets. I felled two more men before the click of an empty gun vibrated through my hand, causing me to drop the gun.
I stepped toward Claire, realizing that we were in more danger than ever and one of our only defenses was gone. My heart sank as I swallowed, readying myself to fight a battle I would lose because a human and a werewolf against a whole pack was impossible. Eva and Mary moved toward us with smirks on their faces, but their expressions darkened in horror as the howls of the Brazil family rent the air.
**********
Claire raised her snout in the air and let out a howl matching the crescendo of the wolves around her perfectly. I covered my ears and closed my eyes as my eardrums trembled with the noise bursting around me. Finally, it ended, and I lowered my hands.
"Sasha!" Bo's voice was the only one I recognized from my family as werewolves fought werewolves all around me. Growls and screams pierced my ears but I wouldn't cover them again when I had to fight for my life.
I opened my eyes, and blinked, glancing around searching for the man I loved before finding him running toward me. Claire stiffened and turned. Her eyes narrowing on me as she took a lumbering step toward me, hulking over my small frame. I took a shaky inhale of breath as she curled her claws, glancing beyond me but I didn't have a chance to turn because she pushed me with such force that I flew through the air before landing on my behind ten feet away.
I sat up dazed, trying to catch my breath as Bo's panicked voice reached me. My eyes moved to him as he stopped in the middle of the street. His eyes were wide with terror and sympathy as he stared at Claire still in her monstrous form. I turned my head, taking in the scene before me. Claire stood in front of Mary and Eva neither had transitioned in the fray.
"Your revenge isn't for me," Eva said, her lips lifting in a smile as she shoved Mary into Claire's hulking form before turning and running away.
"Eva!" Mary screamed terrified as Claire curled one of her claws around Mary's neck, lifting her off the ground. Her other claw raised in the air swiping down Mary's body slicing with her razor sharp claws from chest to pelvic bone, opening her skin wide. Mary's screams rent the air echoing off the houses and trees as her organs spilled on the ground below her. Her blood coated the air as I stared at the gore beneath her, steaming with the last of her warmth.
My gaze moved from her to Eva who turned as she moved to the forest's edge and I could see her smile slide across her face. My stomach turned as I realized, she never had any love for the woman who now lay at Claire's feet. She had simply used her until she was no longer useful. If I didn't know Mary's past crimes, I would have felt sorry for her.
Bo made it to my side as Luca ran toward Claire, his hands out as he said her name softly. The Grey wolves had scattered and the battle was over but I would be stupid to believe it was the end of the war.
As if to prove how right I was, a gun shot rang through the air. Bo stiffened and slumped into my chest as the scent of silver floated through the air and his blood stained my shirt as I caught him in my arms.
