Worry for my defiant mate floods my chest as I storm up to the spare bedroom, that should have stayed just that. Spare. I had visited the small, faun-like creature only a handful of times over the last few days. Ignoring the way her long eyelashes fanned over all too pale cheeks; pretending that the fact she had not gained any colour there, wasn't a silent concern.
Playing ignorance to the way my heart broke, every time Xander read out every injury. Because I couldn't afford to dwell on it. I had an omega that needed me already, I refuse to let the sweetness of her appearance fool me. She is a stranger; a stranger who came to us covered in another man's blood. Something I have had to remind myself of often over the past few days.
The thought of my sweet omega's blood, covering the very woman we had let into our home, sent a chill of savage rage surging through me. I slam the door open, panting so hard my breath trembles as it leaves my mouth.
I lay eyes on my mate, but he isn't looking at me. A forkful of food hangs limply in his hands as he stares towards the bed.
I storm over, ready to give him a punishment he won't forget anytime soon, when I am brought to a grand halt at the sight of his lovely face, covered in tears. But he doesn't look sad, no. My fierce little omega glares at me with an anger I had never seen placed on his features. I'm taken aback; unsure of how to proceed without upsetting him further.
"You big fool! She was so close to finally eating something!"
He pushes at my chest, not that it does much. But it seems to knock my heart ten paces back.
"Now look at what you've done! Do you have any idea how afraid she was when I..."
Pointing at his chest, his hands shaking in his anger... Anger towards me. I decided I didn't like my normally sweet, if not mischievous omega, brought to tears and anger all because of me.
"-Me! An omega, just like her! God only knows what kind of hell she suffered in that place! You, more than anyone should know why I am so desperate to be there for her... You can't keep me away-'
I take my outraged mate into my arms; holding him tightly against my chest, purring just enough to calm him without subduing him completely. If he truly wanted out of my arms, he knew that all he needed to do was simply step away. but he didn't and I breathed a breath of relief.
"She's afraid, Alec... Please."
I hold him tighter, before drawing away to look at him in his red-shot eyes.
"I'm sorry for scaring her, I won't restrict your access..."
I grip his chin forcing him to look into my eyes, so he knows just how serious I am.
"But, you will not be alone with her. Do you understand?"
He gulps hard before answering, well and truly understanding the threat in my eyes. This isn't one of our bickerings, that leads to a rough fuck. This was a warning for real punishment if he crosses me further.
"I understand Alec, I'm sorry for worrying you."
The sound of my brothers entering the room has our attention snapping at the door. I watch as Ivan goes straight to the bed, bending down to look beneath it, before cursing under his breath.
Both Xander and Ivan's furious gazes snap to mine and I can't help the heavy sigh that leaves me. Everyone in this house had gone mad since the little creature turned up. Ivan doesn't look away from the direction of the little omega, as he speaks in a controlled tNoty not wanting to accidentally startle the hiding creature.
I push down the guilt that wants to consume me. I hadn't thought of how I might frighten her. James was never so afraid of us that he would hide from our outbursts. He always knew that we would never hurt him and that an Alpha's temperament is naturally volatile. But this little thing may have never seen an alpha before us; she may not know that an alpha could and would never harm a defenceless omega. The majority of omegas in government-run centres were born from beta parents. Female omegas from alpha families are generally, carefully protected and brought up with great care since they are such a rare happening.
"Let me guess, Sunshine snuck off again."
All eyes turn to James, as he shrinks for a second before straightening his spine, a look of defiance taking over.
"She needed me! She wasn't eating and she was all alone and afraid... I thought having another omega with her would help... And it was! Until mister, I don't know how to open doors like a normal person, came roaring in like some wild animal"
I swat his arse in warning, he had already pushed it far too much today.
"Do not be mistaken my sweet omega, you will be getting punished tonight. How severe it ends up being, will be entirely up to you."
He sighs in resignation, not fighting it before answering.
"Fine... But I'm not sorry for coming to see her."
The determination in his eyes was one we had fought so hard to put there, after months of recovery and I didn't have the heart to crush it, not that I wanted to anyway. But he needed to obey. It is crucial to his safety that he does so...Whether he likes it or not.
"Ivan, take James... make sure he doesn't enjoy his punishment too much."
Ivan hesitates for a second, sharing a knowing look with Xander, before taking one last sorrowful glance at the hiding woman.
His eyes swim with promises of discipline as he approaches James, before throwing him over his shoulder.
"Put me down!"
My alpha brother lets out an amused chuckle before storming out of the room, his voice carrying down the hallway.
"Shall we see just how sorry you can be, my naughty mate?"
Now that I felt secure in the knowledge that he was safe with Ivan, I allowed myself to focus solely on the hiding omega. There's no doubt that she must be in great pain. Her wild cherry scent had been filtered with pure terror when I first entered. But now, it had dulled to a hollow, bitter scent. Tormenting my alpha instincts into comforting the distressed omega.
Xander had already knelt to look at her, his large body folding in two to see beneath the bed. I stand beside him, unsure of how to proceed. It's moments like this that I find myself glad for Xander's expertise.
"How bad?"
He doesn't answer straight away, sitting upright to look at me. A grim expression ageing his face.
"See for yourself."
I lower myself to the floor before bending to look under, just as my alpha brothers had done. What I see there has my fists clenching and guilt like poison, swarming my entire being.
Curled in a tiny ball, the woman had her arms tightly wrapped around her chest; an attempt to self-soothe that seems to have done nothing to help. Empty brown eyes, stare ahead clouded and unseeing. She didn't even flinch as Xander tentatively reached out to her, brushing away stray tendrils of blonde locks, from her delicate face.
Nothing about her reaction to Alphas is in the least bit typical of a highly coveted, pampered omega. Which is exactly what she should have been. Spoilt beyond belief, filled with confidence in the security her standing provides. Instead, she lay before us, a broken shell of what she should have been. It takes every bit of strength to not go feral and tear the room to shreds.
"They will burn for what they have done to her."
