Kazumi groans, her head throbbing with each pulse. Slowly, she pries her eyes open, only to be met with the searing glare of the sun. Shielding her gaze, she tries to piece together the events leading up to this moment.
Ah, yes. They were in the midst of a battle with a villain, a confrontation that had interrupted their journey back to school after receiving their Provisional Hero Licenses.
A wave of relief washes over her as she spots her friends strewn about on the ground, unconscious but seemingly unharmed. Hastening to the nearest figure, she calls out urgently.
"Hey, Shosuke! Wake up!" Her voice carries a note of urgency as she shakes the dual-haired boy, rousing him from his slumber.
Shosuke blinks groggily, confusion evident in his voice as he stirs. "Kazumi? What's going on? Where are we... and were you seriously about to slap me just now?"
Kazumi's grin is unrepentant, though she tries to feign innocence. "What? No, of course not..." Her hand hovers in mid-air, caught in the act, before she playfully follows through with the slap.
"Seriously, Kazumi? I'm already awake!" Shosuke protests, rubbing his cheek with a mock scowl.
Undeterred, Kazumi chuckles mischievously. "Just making sure, Icy hot."
"I told you I hate that nickname..." Shosuke grumbles, accepting Kazumi's offered hand as she helps him to his feet.
His concern shifts to the other two girls still unconscious on the ground. "Itsuki!" Shosuke's voice carries a note of worry as he rushes to his sister's side, gently rousing her from her slumber.
Meanwhile, Kazumi tends to the blonde-haired girl, gently coaxing her back to consciousness, their shared ordeal leaving them all dazed and disoriented in the aftermath of battle.
"Hey, Hikki!" Kazumi's voice is sharp, cutting through the air like a blade, but her friend remains unmoved, lost in the depths of unconsciousness.
With an exasperated groan, Kazumi tries again, this time resorting to a less-than-gentle shake. "Dunce-face! Get up!" Her frustration boils over as she resorts to shaking her friend more vigorously.
"You could be a bit nicer..." Itsuki's voice carries a note of reproach as Shosuke helps her to her feet.
Kazumi's response is immediate and unapologetic. "Hmm, no."
Finally stirring from her slumber, Hikki groans in protest as Kazumi pulls her upright. "Are we back at U.A.?" Her words are tinged with confusion as she rubs at her aching head.
Itsuki echoes Hikki's sentiments, her brow furrowing in confusion as she takes in their surroundings. "What happened?"
The realization dawns on them all at once, a collective understanding of their predicament. "So what? That stupid villain had a teleportation quirk?!" Kazumi's frustration bubbles to the surface as she voices their shared confusion.
Shosuke offers a nonchalant shrug. "Seems like it."
Hikki's confusion only deepens. "But why didn't he use it during the fight?"
Kazumi dismisses the question with a wave of her hand. "Doesn't matter now. Let's find Sensei."
Itsuki's gaze sweeps the area, her eyes narrowing as she spots the absence of two of their companions. "Wait, where are Hato and Shosuke? They were with us during the fight."
Hikki's reassurance is swift, a calming presence amidst their growing concern. "I'm sure they're fine. They probably just got teleported somewhere else."
Itsuki takes a steadying breath, her resolve firming. "First things first, let's go talk to Sensei. He can help us find them."
As they make their way through the throngs of students, the familiar chime of the school bell heralds the end of classes, signaling the beginning of their quest.
With determination etched on their faces, our four teens press on, navigating the sea of bodies with single-minded purpose.
But fate, it seems, has other plans.
Kazumi collides with someone, tumbling to the ground in a jumble of limbs and indignation. As she gathers herself to unleash a torrent of angry words, she freezes, her voice caught in her throat, as she comes face to face with a figure from her past.
"I'm so sorry! I should've watched where I was going. Are you alright?" The worried voice cuts through Kazumi's irritation, momentarily quelling her rising frustration. She grunts in annoyance but accepts the proffered hand, allowing herself to be pulled upright.
Before she can respond, her gaze locks onto the figure before her, and she freezes in place. Shock registers in her widening eyes, but she swiftly regains her composure. "I'm fine," she mutters tersely, her voice lacking its usual edge.
With a casual farewell, the redhead flashes a grin, revealing a set of sharp teeth, before darting off to catch up with his companion. "Bakubro! Wait up!" The blonde's irritated shout echoes after them, punctuated by a laugh from the departing redhead.
As Kazumi watches them disappear into the crowd, her expression remains frozen in a mask of disbelief. It takes a moment for the world to snap back into focus, her friends' concerned voices breaking through her reverie.
"Kazumi? Kazumi! Hey, are you alright?" Hikki's hand waves frantically in front of her face, snapping her back to reality.
Shaking her head to clear away the lingering shock, Kazumi takes a deep breath, her mind racing with a newfound urgency. "We have to find out what year it is! Check—check your phone!" Her fingers fumble for her phone, urgency lending speed to her actions, but the screen remains stubbornly blank. A quick glance at her friends confirms their devices are suffering from the same fate.
"Kazumi, what's going on? You look like you've seen a ghost," Shosuke's voice is laced with concern, his brow furrowing as he tries to make sense of the situation.
But for Kazumi, the truth is far stranger than any ghost story, and as the reality of their predicament sinks in, she knows they're in for a wild ride.
"I need to know what year it is!" Kazumi's urgency propels her into a full-on sprint toward the school, her friends' footsteps echoing behind her. The rush of wind against her face, the pounding of her heart—everything fades into the background as her singular focus hones in on one pressing question.
As she races through the corridors, her mind races even faster. Why are her dads... 16? The realization hits her like a punch to the gut, sending a jolt of disbelief coursing through her veins. It's a surreal thought, one that threatens to upend her sense of reality.
But there's no time to dwell on the strangeness of it all. Kazumi barrels forward, determination driving her onward as she seeks answers from their teacher, the only beacon of stability in this topsy-turvy world.
