Lily's Diary
Wednesday 27th October
I took Caleb today.
When everyone was distracted by the grand reveal of Darren's secrets over breakfast, there was an opportunity. David stood up and accused Darren him, and after that, Jake did what he said he would, and David took charge.
I can trust them.
When Caleb started crying, I said I'd look after him and took him outside to the porch and waited. The rain didn't bother me and Caleb was warm enough once I'd wrapped him in my jumper and sat him over my knees.
I could hardly look at the kid.
It wasn't long before he came back. The Ghost, The Spirit, whatever you want to call him, stood in front of the porch, buffeted by the rain but remaining perfectly dry.
'Good work,' he said, leaning on a long, twisted wood staff.
I waited for him to do something, to take Caleb out of my arms and fly to hell with him. He would torture the kid for eternity, and for what? So I could stay free?
Except he didn't.
The Ghost just said his two words and spun away, walking down the path. I couldn't let him. I had to know I was safe.
I put Caleb by my side.
'Wait!' I called, standing under the porch as my whole body shook. 'I did what you asked.'
He turned to me, fascinated.
'Yes. The police will forget your father ever existed.'
'But what did you want him for?' I looked at the toddler, who grabbed my leg and shivered.'
'Him? Oh, nothing. The point was to see if you'd do it.'
'Why?'
'Sometimes it's hard to know who people really are.' He looked into the wind. 'To know what they deserve.'
And with that, he was gone.
