I stand next to Hank, holding a clipboard. After getting to my hotel last night, I had pretty much collapsed on my bed, and gone to sleep. This morning I had gotten up at 4:10 so that I could be at work at 5:00. Hank had given me a tour of the huge facility, and I had tried to memorize where the important things were, such as the bathroom. Currently, Hank was testing me to see if I had remembered everything that he had showed me. I most definitely had not.
"Sky, where are the-" Hank stops mid-sentence as his boss walks in, with four other people. Two women, one with wavy blonde hair that falls past her shoulders, and other with shorter auburn-colored hair. There is a man with short, brown hair wearing sunglasses, and a leather jacket. Then there is him. A young man with gorgeous brown hair and the bluest eyes I have ever seen. I feel my heart rate speed up and I cannot stop staring at him. What's going on with me? I look away before the man catches me staring at him, and follow Hank over to the five people, who are looking at the large, silver plane that Hank has been working on.
"It's...uh...Supersonic. Most advanced plane ever built." Hank said, walking over towards the plane. "You should see it real life. It's incredible." He continues. It's only my first day, and I already know that the plane is extremely important to him.
"Hank, Sky, these are the special new recruits I was telling you about. This is Hank McCoy, one of our most talented young researchers, and his new assistant, Sky Reynolds." Hank's boss said, and the young man with the blue eyes steps forward, shaking Hank's hand.
"How wonderful!" He said, with a smile. "Two mutants, already here." The minute he says it, I internally cringe. I knew that they called people like me mutants, but I had never been called one before. I exchanged a nervous look with Hank. How did this man know that we are mutants? The man turned to Hank's boss, smiling. "Why didn't you say?"
"Say what?" Hank's boss replied, confused. Neither Hank, nor I, had told him of our mutations. I wondered if I would get fired because of it. Yesterday, I would have been ready to go home if someone had handed me a plane ticket. Now that I know that I don't have to be alone, I'm not sure that I want to be.
"Because you don't know." The young man realized that our boss didn't know of our mutations, and he turned to us. "I am so, so terribly sorry." He said, looking very upset over this.
"Hank? Sky?" Our boss walked towards us, a questioning look on his face.
"You didn't ask..so I didn't tell." Hank says, looking down and putting his hands in his pockets. His boss looks at me.
"I just got here. It's...uh...not exactly something that I like to share..." I said quietly, looking away. The girl with the blonde hair looked curiously at Hank.
"So your mutation is what? You're super smart?" She asked, stepping forward.
"I'll say. Hank graduated Harvard at the age of fifteen." The blue-eyed man said. How does he know that? I look at him carefully, trying to figure out how he knows everything.
"I wish that's all it was..." Hank replied, looking down.
"You're among friends now Hank. You can show off." The man with the stunning blue eyes said. Hank looked over at me, and I touched his hand lightly and nodded. I had a feeling that we could trust this people, and my instincts were rarely wrong. Hank slowly took his shoes off, then his socks, revealing his oddly-shaped feet. Instead of toes, he had fingers on his feet, so they looked more like hands than feet. When Hank and I were little, we would play hide-and-seek in the woods. He would always hang in trees where I couldn't see him, and I would spend hours looking for him. After a while, he would jump down from a tree, scaring me. I would always scream, then laugh when I realized it was him. "Splendid." The man said, smiling at Hank.
"Excuse me." Hank said, walking past the people so that he was directly under the plane. He jumped, flipping and hanging onto the wing of the plane with his feet. Everyone clapped and cheered.
"What about you Sky?" The young man asked Hearing him say my name made my heart flutter, and I stared at him, inarticulate. "What's your mutation."
"Oh, um, well...you might want to step back." Everyone took about five steps back, and stared at me. I took a deep breath, and stared at a lamp that was illuminating a desk. Focusing hard, I felt myself drawing its light away from it. Soon, a ball of light was resting in my hands.
"Brilliant!" The young man said, smiling. Everyone applauded, and I smiled softly.
"That's not all." I said, taking a deep breath. I concentrated on a recycling bin, then thrust the ball of light at it. The light made contact with the bin and obliterated it. I turned around to see everyone staring at me, shock obvious on all of there faces. Then they started clapping.
"You are incredible Sky!" The young man says, coming up to me. I blush and look down. The blonde girl walks over to Hank and they start talking. "I'm Charles," He said. "Charles Xavier." He has a British accent that makes everything he says more professional.
"You're a mutant too, right?" I asked, looking over him. Then I finally realize how he knows everything. "You're a mind-reader."
"Correct." He says, with a smile.
"Besides Hank, I have never met any other mutants," I said, smiling back. "It's nice to know that I'm not alone."
