Rey knew from the moment she had spotted the ship, she should have saddled up her orbak and gotten the hell out of town. From where she stood, on the barren sand dunes, she could see a rogue TIE silencer crash from the sky.

Rey watched in sick horror, too shocked to look away from the ship crashing to the horizon beneath her. She was petrified of the mere thought of riding in one of those ships. Let alone being on it when it came crashing down from the sky.

She was so close to the impact that she felt the vibrations of the ground shake as the ship crashed. The aftershock of the explosion rattled her bones, and with the burst of the ship came the running of silence in her ears.

It lasted a mere few moments, but by the time the ringing had subsided, there was a noticeable fog of black smoke that billowed from the wreck. Her orbak whined as she walked him as close to the wreck as she could.

She wished she could walk away from it all, leave the ship to boil, and rot away in the hot Jakku sun. Let it become nothing but another discarded scrap of metal, amongst the endless stretch of sand. But something deep down in her being urged her to check the wreckage.

A force unbeknownst to her urged her to get as close to the ship as she could. She told herself it was because of her scavenger brain, that she needed to look to see if there were discarded parts to sell. But she knew the truth deep down. There was something important on that ship. And she needed to discover it for herself.

She could feel it in her bones.

Something powerful had landed on Jakku.

The dust of the dessert stuck to her skin as she broke out in a cold sweat. The sun gave no mercy to the lone traveler. Burning her skin, as she readjusted her sleeves to shelter her skin from the sun. Rey cautiously approached the scorched wreckage, her instincts told her to flee the scene. But her heart told her to search the rubble.

She searched with caution, bearing in mind there could be live explosives on the exterior of the ship. She worked quickly glancing over the perimeter of the ship for engine scraps or copper that could be traded for coins. She was having no luck, finding bits of unusable broken metal. It wasn't until she went inside – what would have been – the interior of the ship did she see him.

In the ruins lay a man, strapped into the pilot's seat. Somehow the area around him had remained perfectly intact. What a stroke of luck he had to have survived such a horrid crash.

His helmet covered the entirety of his face. The solid black metal concealed his identity from Rey. He was dressed in a fitted leather outfit. It clung tight to his skin, the leather complimented his fit figure. Rey's face flushed at the sight of him.

Embarrassed by things she couldn't control, Rey cast her eyes downward, towards the man's boots. Not even a scuff on the heel of his boot. Impossibly, among the shattered ruins of his ship, he was pristine. Rey could see no trace amounts of blood on his clothing, even as she inched closer to him.

Over the years she had become quite talented in medicine. She learned to heal her companions in the first few weeks of being on the range. It was quite a useful skill, as getting injured on the range was inevitable. She decided that she needed to check out the stranger's wounds and make sure he was okay.

Rey walked closer to the man, kneeling next to the captain's chair to get a closer look at him. She watched as his chest rose and fell, and she shakily sighed with relief at the sign of his life.

She hummed to herself, a tune she had heard somewhere in her childhood. It was a habit she had when she got nervous. She would hum a tune to herself, often being alone, this rarely bothered anyone. She looked over at the man once again, instinctually wanting to check his whole body and make sure he was physically safe.
