April 22, 1912

TITANIC SCANDAL: ARTHUR DAVENPORT'S DAUGHTER INVOLVED WITH FIFTH OFFICER?

According to an anonymous source, millionairess Katherine Davenport, daughter of the CEO of the Southern United States' largest iron company, Arthur Davenport, has been romantically involved with Titanic's Fifth Officer since the ship's ill-fated maiden voyage. The credible source, a first class passenger also aboard Titanic, claims that Miss Davenport's romantic relationship with Mr. Harold Lowe jeopardized the safety of the evacuation that was overseen by the officer.

The White Star Line instructions to commanders states that it is forbidden for officers to have convivial intercourse with passengers or each other. If what the anonymous source claims is true, then the Fifth Officer not only disobeyed the strict guidelines given to him by his employers, but also endangered the lives of many passengers with his careless and inappropriate behavior on the night of the tragic sinking.

Neither Mr. Lowe nor Mr. Davenport, on behalf of his daughter, has commented on the allegations. As the inquiry continues, the story will further develop, and the truth behind Mr. Lowe's actions on that night will come to light.

Until then, it's safe to say that, in addition to their careless navigation of the great ship, Titanic's officers also cared little about the guidelines they vowed to follow.

When Katherine first came across the article written about her and Harold, she felt as though she was going to be sick. By the time she finished reading it, however, the room around her spun uncontrollably and her heartbeat pounded in her ears. Who on Earth would possibly go to the press regarding her and Harold's relationship– and why would they insinuate that he cared little about the evacuation of passengers because of his feelings?

And what would it mean for Harold once word of the allegations reached his employers?

She wanted to speak with him about it, but he and the other officers had left for Washington earlier that morning. They had been gone all day, leaving her to wonder whether or not Harold was aware of the awful article written in the paper about them. Was he questioned about it at the inquiry?

Katherine found herself reading the article several more times throughout the day, for it was something that she just couldn't stop herself from thinking about. The anonymous source was a first class passenger? She wondered who on Earth would possibly benefit from such a thing, but as her eyes landed on a familiar figure entering her home's sitting room, she realized who it could have been. She stood to her feet and crossed the room to stand in front of Maxwell before he was able to leave her sight.
