CHAPTER EIGHT,
selcouth

═════════════

April 13, 1912

REST DIDN'T COME EASILY for Harold that night. The few short hours before his next watch were spent laying in the small bed in his cabin, staring up at the ceiling while his mind raced with distracting thoughts. It was no secret that Katherine Davenport was the one on his mind.

By the time the middle watch came around, Harold was absolutely exhausted. The next several hours spent in the wheelhouse with Officer Herbert Pitman were long and seemingly never-ending. Finally, the watch in his pocket read four in the morning, and Moody and Boxhall arrived on the bridge to relieve the other two junior officers. Harold wanted nothing more than to retire to his quarters and catch up on some much needed rest, for the weariness that weighed heavily down on him was something that he hadn't experienced since his days as a ship's boy aboard schooners.

His excursions with Katherine below deck certainly took a toll on him (the bruise on his ribs had gotten darker over the past several hours, creating a constant dull though painful ache in his side) yet if he was given the choice, he'd do it all over again!

Harold stood beside Pitman as the older officer updated Moody and Boxhall on the current condition of the ship. He stifled a yawn, his eyes glued to a random spot on the wall of the wheelhouse as he allowed himself to zone out. It wasn't until a hand was shoved into his face, waving across his vision, that he was pulled back into reality.

All three officers were looking at him in amusement, but it was Pitman who commented on his obvious lack of attention. "You've looked awful all night, mate! Did ya spend your evening partying rather than catching up on sleep?"

Lowe hoped that the heat that rose to his cheeks wasn't noticeable to the others. He was surprised that Pitman's joking statement had been so accurate! He quickly shook his head, shrugging off the comment with a simple: "Don't be ridiculous."

Without giving any of the officers a chance to make another comment, the Welshman excused himself and began to make his way towards the officers' quarters. Moody, however, wasn't satisfied. He followed closely behind.

"Were you with her?" the younger officer questioned.

Harold froze, nearly caused Moody to run into his back, and turned to look at him with wide eyes. "What?"

"That passenger– you were with her, weren't you?" James spoke in a teasing tone, his lips curling into a cheeky grin.

"Be quiet, please!" Harold looked over Moody's shoulder, making sure that neither Pitman nor Boxhall had followed them. His reaction caused the younger officer to snicker in amusement.
