The hallways were eerily empty. The period right before lunch was always bustling and loud. It made my ears ring. So when I stopped at my locker and realized I left my math textbook in the class room, I was disappointed with myself. I was going to have to go all the way back just so I could do my homework.
I put the rest of my supplies in my leather backpack and threw it over my shoulder. I pushed my bangs out of my eyes and backtracked to the math room.
You're probably wondering why I needed my book right away, right? It's because I'm a nerd. I've had this goal ever since I was 6 that I was going to have the highest GPA in my school. I needed that text book for my homework.
Once I turned the corner, I understood why the halls were empty. There was a fight going on and the whole school was circled around it. Southwestern is a small school. My graduating class has 34 students, so I wasn't exaggerating.
The entire hallway was being taken up and I really needed that text book. There was no way I would politely get through that rambunctious crowd. So I did the most stupid thing in my whole life. I went through the fight. I easily pushed my way through, except for the occasional stare. I was suddenly out of the mass sea of bodies. I was in the front and center of the fight.
My sudden pause caused the torture I would endure for the next month. The one guy had taken a cheap shot to the other guys stomach, sending him tumbling backwards. If I wanted to be crushed I could have just stood there. But I wanted to live so I caught the guy by his muscular arms and pushed him upright. He was heavy against my arms.
The whole crowd went quiet.
"How did she do that?"
"Since when does she go here?"
"Who is that?"
"How have I never noticed her before?"
"That's the teachers pet."
"She just pushed a 200 pound teenage guy upright.""Yes, I did. Thanks for noticing! I've gone here my whole life," I shouted above the voice making them quiet again.
"She talks."
"She's hot.""Okay, enough. Move," I said, pushing through the bodies to get to the classroom.
I made the mistake of turning around. My eyes locked with the guy I pushed to his feet. They were miles of blue in this eyes. He gave me a cocky smirk and walked away from his enemy.
I heard footsteps running behind me while I continued my walk to math.
"What the actual hell, Phoenix?" Jade demanded, grabbing my wrist and spinning me around.
I rolled my eyes, "I needed to get my text book."
I walked through the math door and grabbed my book from the first desk. Just where I left it.
"You manhandled that beautiful teenage boy," she shouted.
"I did not manhandle him. I helped him catch his balance," I argued.
"You picked him up and set him down," she exaggerated.
"Jade, I didnt. I pushed him away to protect my precious life. Why's it such a big deal?" I asked.
We walked back to the cafeteria.
"Okay, for one, guys are talking about you. I'm not talking about nerdy boys who like Pokémon. I'm talking about full grown, out of puberty, hot guys. They are all talking about you, this is a big deal," she continued.
"Guys don't talk about me. That'll be over with by next period," I chuckled sadly.
"I don't think so," she said under her breath when we walked into the cafeteria.
