chapter 1 - the easter ball

It was finally here. 9th april.

For someone, it was just a regular day. For christians, it meant Easter.

For our church, it meant also something else - The Easter ball.

It was a celebration that happened every single year. For our parish, it was definitely the biggest event of the year. The people from church always cooked the dinner, baked pastries and in the late hours, they turned up the music and you could dance with your partner to some romantic music.

I decided to wear my prettiest white dress with faded stripes. It wasn't the shortest, it fell below the knees.

I think I own more white clothes than girls my age. I mean, every single piece of clothing I own is white. Even socks and even the fucking under wear.

At least it makes me look innocent, pure, because I am not.

I even decided to put a little make-up on, I put mascara on my eyelashes and a sparkly lipgloss on my lips. I stared at my reflection in the small pink mirror on my table, wondering if I'm stereotypically pretty, or at least cute.

All of a sudden, I heard steps. My mom burst into my room, without knocking, as usual.

"Elise, lets go."

I turned my head towards her. "Of course. I'm ready."

Mom looked at me from head to toe. I was waiting for a compliment, or at least some kind of comment...but she didnt say anything. She gave me a blank look and left without a word.

I just ache to be loved.

We were amongst the first to arrive at the ball. There were only a few adults and my friends were nowhere to be found, so all I could do was sit in the corner and watch the others. That is one of my favorite activities - watching the people around me. What they do, how they act, how they look, everything about them.

Meanwhile, my parents were in a conversation with an older couple, a conversation I didn't want to be a part of, since I couldn't care less about their lives. I didn't even know who those people were.

After a little while, people I knew started coming.

I saw Lucy and Sylvia, my friends. They both wore beautiful dresses, Lucy's was beige and Sylvia's was pink.

I also saw Sarah, my best friend for life. She had a black dress with lace all over.

Then, the boys started coming in as well.

When Troye walked by me, he raised his hand in greeting and winked at me. The two of us have a lot of history - at a certain point in my life, when I was failing math, he was my tutor. He was very pretty, cute even. But that's all. I tried to not even like him, but have a crush on him. Love him.

But I couldn't. I couldn't force myself to love him.

Joshua was one of the more handsome boys as well. He was 2 years older than me and had very beautiful chocolate eyes. He was tall and all the girls from the church had a crush on him. All of them except me.

I saw Omar as well. He was popular amongst the girls as well, but unlike Joshua, he was older, 25 I think. He smiled and me and raised his hand. I thought he looked pretty cute in the suit.

I dreamed about finding a boyfriend on the Easter ball for years. And that day, April 9th, was D-day for me. Nothing and no one could stop me when I stood up and walked through the room, in my long white dress, looking like an angel.
